In this introductory book, Groover not only takes a modern, all-inclusive look at manufacturing processes but also provides substantial coverage of engineering materials and production systems. It follows a more quantitative and design-oriented approach than other texts in the market, helping readers gain a better understanding of important concepts. They’ll also discover how material properties relate to the process variables in a given process as well as how to perform manufacturing science and quantitative engineering analysis of manufacturing processes.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This book takes a modern, all-inclusive look at manufacturing processes. Its coverage is strategically divided--65% concerned with manufacturing process technologies, 35% dealing with engineering materials and production systems. Groover adopts an approach that is more quantitative and engineering-oriented than most competing books, with more equations and numerical problem exercises. His goal is to make the subject of manufacturing processes more of an objective science and less of a descriptive art. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Back Cover

A modern, all-inclusive look at manufacturing

In this modern, quantitative approach to manufacturing, Mikell Groover offers balanced coverage of the three basic engineering materials––metals, ceramics, polymers, as well as composites––along with recently developed manufacturing processes and electronics manufacturing technologies.

ThroughoutFundamentals of Modern Manufacturing, the emphasis is on manufacturing science and quantitative analysis of manufacturing processes. This emphasis helps students understand the relationships among the material properties and the process variables in a given manufacturing process.

Now updated and revised, this Third Edition of Fundamentals of Modern Manufacturing features:

  • New chapter on Nanofabrication Technologies, which describes the importance of nanotechnology and future commercial products that will be made possible by this technology.
  • Updated chapter on Microfabrication Technologies with new material describing how compact discs are produced.
  • More than 1700 end-of-chapter review questions, multiple-choice quiz questions, and quantitative analysis problems, including many new questions and problems in this edition.

See manufacturing processes in action with SME videos!

This text is packaged with a DVD based on the Society of Manufacturing Engineers’ Fundamental Manufacturing Processes video series. The DVD contains brief video clips that promote visualization of key manufacturing processes. Chapters in the text include references to the videos, and several new end-of-chapter questions relate to the videos.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Text. Beware the typos!, November 3, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
From a student's perspective, this is a very good textbook on manufacturing. I must give a warning however to both students and professors, however. This book is chock-full of typos. I'm not talking small, grammar-related typos; I'm talking about significant typos such as formula errors: variables missing, variables inside parentheses that should be outside them, etc. (If you have the text, note equations 11.3 and 11.4 on p. 243 for fairly blatant examples.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Modern Manufacturing, May 4, 1998
By A Customer
I think this is a great reference book. I have had prof. Groover in 3 of my Industrial Engineering classes at Lehigh University. There is not a single semester when I don't go back to use the book as a reference. The book is very easy to read, and to understand.
