Book Description

January 26, 1990 0521349419 978-0521349413
Noise and vibration affect engineering structures of all kinds. This textbook provides students with a unified treatment of engineering noise and vibration analysis and control. The main feature of the book is the bringing together of vibration and noise within a single volume rather than treating each topic in isolation. Particular emphasis is placed on the wave-mode duality and the interactions between sound waves and solid structures. The book is primarily intended as a textbook for undergraduates in the final year of an engineering course. Postgraduates and professionals will also find that it is a useful overview of the field. There are specific case studies, test cases, and examples for students to work through.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"The book is thoroughly enjoyable, well written, economic, and beautifully printed in the traditional style of the Cambridge University Press. It makes a valuable addition to the libraries of students and practicing specialists alike." Guillermo C. Gaunaurd, Applied Mechanics Review

Book Description

In this second edition, Michael Norton's classic text has been extensively updated to take into account the latest developments in the field. The book treats both noise and vibration in a single volume, with particular emphasis on wave-mode duality and interactions between sound waves and solid structures. This is primarily a textbook for senior level undergraduate and graduate courses, but will also be a valuable reference for researchers and practicing engineers. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the Bunch, November 2, 2010

I've collected a large number of books on noise and vibrations as I've had to learn this subject and then teach it to others, and as far as I'm concerned this is the best of the bunch. It is well organized with chapters on mechanical vibrations, sound waves, interaction of sound and vibration, measurement and control of noise, signal processing, statistical energy analysis and pipe flow noise. It starts from fundamental principles, but moves quickly to applications with an excellent balance between theory and practice. I would highly recommend this to anyone wanting to learn more about the interaction of sound and vibration, whether they're a student or a practicing professional.
