Editorial Reviews

Review

Matthew Ma has a deep understanding of the world of patents from the legal, technology, and business perspective. However, the brilliance of his book is the reduction of these complex concepts into easy to understand language. As the title would indicate, it is great for Scientists and Engineers, but also a must read for technology business leaders. --James Billmaier, Founder, Patent Navigation Inc.

This is an excellent and useful book meant to help both the beginners and experts, written in an easy-to-read style starting from the basics and going into technical depths. The author gives many practical tips based on his extensive experience in patenting and in working in R&D. --Prabir Bhattacharya, Concordia University, Montreal, Canada

More About the Author

Dr. Matthew Ma has an extensive industrial experience having worked in the field of electrical and computer engineering with 30 publications and 14 U.S. granted patents. He had also had several roles in the intellectual property field including IP analyst, in-house IP counsel and Director of Patent Strategy in the last several years before he founded Scientific Works. He is an IEEE senior member and also a patent agent admitted to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Ma's book "Fundamentals of Patenting and Licensing for Scientists and Engineers" has been featured in IEEE Spectrum Oct 2009 issue titled "A book about patents by an engineer, for engineers". It is indeed his engineer background that motivated him to write his book about patents from the unique perspective of engineers and inventors -- the very source of innovations, and help them create truly valuable assets that can be utilized. With this philosophy, his company Scientific Works provides IP consultancy for engineers/scientists and patent filing for entrepreneurs and individual inventors.

IMO the book is true to it's title and purpose: going beyond how to writing a patent, and informing the reader/inventor on the decisions to make BEFORE patent application and what their real-world impact on the value patent protection provides when granted.

Ma uses very clear and easy to read writing, the result of his extensive experience with the different aspects of the innovation, patent law, and facilitating the communication between inventors and lawyers.

As a reader, three things stand out of Ma's work that aren't easily found elsewhere:
1) the real-world examples his uses frequently to go beyond the basics of a concept
2) his use of graphics to illustrate complex relationships on those examples.
3) the practice cases following the examples, which helped me putting together the concepts "by doing"

Therefore I recommend this book to all inventors for the first time in devising how to protecting their inventions Intellectual Property value.

Although information is valuable, book is very poorly written. Complex subject makes clarity and proper English usage essential for understanding, both of which are sorely lacking in this book. I found the mistakes frequent and jarring, and had to reread passages several times in order to understand what information was being conveyed. I would not recommend this book to anyone.

The book is over-advertised. I am satisfied with it, but the style is stilted. Information is quite helpfull and I am glad I purchased it. It does fill, but with trying jargon, a here-to-fore vacent niche.
