Critical topics associated with speech production such as word stress and transcription of disordered speech are sometimes difficult to grasp for introductory communication science and disorders students. The third edition of Fundamentals of Phonetics meets this challenge by offering readers a clear, welcoming, and practical introduction to phonetics that pairs easy-to-understand prose with an array of helpful learning tools and resources. While learning the fundamentals of speech mechanism anatomy, transcription of connected speech, clinical phonetics, and dialectical variation, students will benefit from learning objectives, extensive exercises with answers provided, a complete glossary of terms, and auditory samples (CD Set available separately) that make learning about phonetic transcription more manageable, systematic, and engaging.

New to This Edition

  • New introductory material on the use of electronic fonts (Chapter 1) is provided to acquaint the reader in the use of computer fonts in transcription of speech.
  • New information on speech acoustics (Chapters 4 & 5) includes the addition of several spectrograms illustrating the acoustic characteristics of speech sounds to help students better understand vowels and consonant production.
  • A complete revision of the clinical phonetics chapter (Chapter 7) includes updated information on speech sound disorders. Readers are provided with expanded coverage relative to the transcription of disordered speech using both diacritical markings and non-English IPA symbols.
  • A complete revision of the dialects chapter (Chapter 8) provides the reader with more current information and contemporary perspectives on how native language impacts learning of a second language.
  • New and updated exercises throughout the text supplement the new written material and ensure that every learning tool is up-to-date and relevant.
  • Online resources are listed at the end of each chapter, allowing students to learn more about the material they have just covered or to research topics that especially interest them. References have also been updated throughout the text to keep the text current and accurate.
  •   Learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter provide the reader with an outline of goals and main concepts.

Can't believe everything you read. Silly me for reading the Amazon review and believing a CD would be included with a new copy of this book. It' ain't. But gee, the back of the book tells me the ISBN for the Supplemental Audio CD: 0132582619Small Audio CD Funda Phone Ssp 3. Or, if you want them together, look for 0132700646. Fundamentals of Phonetics with Audio CDs Glad I ordered early. Grrrr...

I am currently pursuing a career in Speech Language Pathology and recently finished taking a course in Phonetics and Articulation.
This book was extremely helpful, clear, comprehensive and easily understood. I would highly recommend this for anyone who is seriously considering a profession in the field of speech. Even if this is not a required text for your class, which in my case it was, it is worth the money to buy this book and save it as a reference and material that you can supplement for whatever you may be learning! It contains a lot of practice, and in more expensive additions you can receive a CD which has prerecorded utterances that have homework/assignments in which you transcribe these different utterances (usually people with accents or language influenced english etc.) I may sound repetitive but really this is an amazing book!

I was pleasantly surprised by this textbook! For one, I can't remember the last time, if ever, I went through an entire textbook in a class. Normally we get part way through. Then you're stuck with half a book you're never going to touch again. But this book was useful from cover to cover. Not just useful, but engaging. I went into the course knowing nothing about phonetics, but between the teacher and the text, I now feel very competent. The activities really help you learn, and the CDs are surprisingly useful accompaniments. I can't sell this book back because it is absolutely filled with writing and highlighter, but I wouldn't sell it back even if I could. I'm actually going to keep it and probably end up referring to it because it is so handy. I would definitely recommend this text for teachers selecting a book for their phonetics classes. Probably the best textbook I've ever been assigned to use.

This book came before I started my online course. It was easier to rent and saved me a fortune on what would have been a 200-300 dollar book. I would definitely rent another textbook through Amazon again

I needed this book for an online phonetics class I was taking. I did not realize when I rented this book from Amazon that I would be required to complete homework assignments in the book, TEAR OUT THE PAGES and scan and upload them for my class. I suppose I could have photocopied each page and not have torn it out, but that would have been a LOT of extra work. I don't think that Amazon should rent this title because I assume many professors are going to make use out of the homework assignments in the book, and then students will not be able to return the rented book. I had to purchase this book at the end of the semester because I could not return it.
