Book Description

March 1, 2003 0971408106 978-0971408104 1
A practical course in the fundamentals of machinery diagnostics for anyone who works with rotating machinery, from operator to manager, from design engineer to machinery diagnostician. This comprehensive book thoroughly explains and demystifies important concepts needed for effective machinery malfunction diagnosis: (A) Vibration fundamentals: vibration, phase, and vibration vectors. (B) Data plots: timebase, average shaft centerline, polar, Bode, APHT, spectrum, trend XY, and the orbit. (C) Rotor dynamics: the rotor model, dynamic stiffness, modes of vibration, anisotropic (asymmetric) stiffness, stability analysis, torsional and axial vibration, and basic balancing. Modern root locus methods (pioneered by Walter R. Evans) are used throughout this book. (D) Malfunctions: unbalance, rotor bow, high radial loads, misalignment, rub and looseness, fluid-induced instability, and shaft cracks. Hundreds of full-color illustrations explain key concepts, and several detailed case studies show how these concepts were used to solve real machinery problems. A comprehensive glossary of diagnostic terms is included.

The book is useful for everyone who works on a rotordynamics field. Also coloured pictures are cool. I've been preparing rotordynamic mathematical models thus the one hepls me to understand better real systems.

5.0 out of 5 stars Field Vibration Engineer's Bible, July 14, 2010
This review is from: Fundamentals of Rotating Machinery Diagnostics (Design and Manufacturing) (Hardcover)
Having been an MDS field engineer for Bently Nevada Corporation at the time that BNC was owned by Mr. Bently (now GE), the field support group (MDS) were responsible for addressing and solving actual machinery problems on a commercial scale. We were always in different plants and places most every week, which provided a diversity of machinery experience.

When Mr. Bently published this book, my personal reaction was that it accumilated and encompassed most everything that needed to be known by an MDS engineer. The practical application of field work meets the methods and teachings of what a vibration engineer should know. It is all laid out in this book in an easy to understand format.

If you are into machinery diagnostics and vibration analysis, this book is akin to having a personal tutor who provides a fantastic insight into the world of machinery dynamics and diagnostics. Speaking as a professional field engineer myself, it really is a must have reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!, July 31, 2006
By
Jeroen (Netherlands) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fundamentals of Rotating Machinery Diagnostics (Design and Manufacturing) (Hardcover)
As a Rotating Equipment engineer I went to most of the Bently nevada courses dealing with machinery diagnostics. This book represents the written form of the courses and MORE! The illustrations are very clear and can provide the expert and beginning engineer who is doing vibration analysis a good reference and learning guide. Most book deal mostly with vibration analysis of ant-friction bearings and does not use DM2000, System1, Orbits etc. This book does all that!
A must-have for all vibration analysts.
