An SAR MUST!,

This review is from: Fundamentals of Search and Rescue (Paperback)
As a technical mountain search and rescue team member and trainer, I believe there is no better investment than this manual for anyone interested in search and rescue. It is worth its cost simply in the document resources. If every team member doesn't have one, at least have a couple copies for any SAR team!

I'm on a local search and rescue team and wanted to enhance my practical experience with Nasar's SAR tech 2 official certification. The book I purchased is helping me to accomplish this goal. A great amount of it is common sense so is excellent for beginners, if not boring, but it also contains a lot of new material that I found to be both challenging and informative. It is an excellent source of information for an individual hiker or an entire team. I only wish the book had a question and answer pool for those of us studying for the SAR tech exam. Generally, the money I spent for the book was an excellent investment and I have no regrets.

I bought this when I started with a SAR group over a year ago, and state sponsored training was hard to come by. Training opportunities have since greatly improved. Now, having just finished my Virginia State Field Team Member certification, I can say that I have found this book to be an outstanding reference. The book is not used as a text in that course so there was some material (Virginia unique) in the course not covered in the book, but NASAR can hardly be faulted for that. The print quality, use of color, and breadth of subject matter make it indispensable. It even has a very good primer on the Incident Command System. Also very well done is the chapter on land navigation - excellent color graphics that clearly explain the components of the standard USGS 7.5' quad maps. At $45, it's a bit pricey, but if you're looking to get into SAR, this will help you become effective much more quickly. I have browsed through the other offerings on Amazon - lots of books about SAR dogs - but have not found anything comparable in terms of a good general introduction to SAR. Go ahead and fork over the money. Highly, highly recommended.

I am glad that I purchased NASAR's Fundamentals of Search and Rescue on here at the used price. While the book is full of information dealing with all aspects of search and rescue, I found it just and OK book to have. I would not have paid the full price that NASAR asks for it and that's for sure.
I am awaiting for the upgrade / re-write of this book which is due to be released sometime next year as I have been told by a student who took this class out in New Hampshire a couple of months back. My SAR team director at my request, did purchase the instructor's cd that goes with the book. The cd is not layed out in an easy understandable manner. The slides are very lacking in information that can be given to the students and then put to use out in the field. I am glad the powerpoint slides can be edited and your materials added in for your local search area/state.

Good, informative book. A bit "dry" at times, but legal stuff is hard for me to get through. A "must have" to pass the SARTECH II test.
