When it comes to video based training for SolidWorks there are two major companies out there providing the training - SolidProfessor and Inspirtech. I found quite a bit of video examples from both companies on YouTube and started watching them to see if I could decide with one was better. After doing the research and looking into both products I decided to go with Inspirtech because of the overall price vs. value. The reason I went with Inspirtech is because the price of the DVD is under $100 for 14.5 hours of video training and SolidProfessor offers their DVD for $300 and only 10 hours of video training. The video training from Inspirtech is much more affordable and I just can't see myself paying over 3 times the amount of money for less training as both companies basically offer the same thing. After spending some time with the Inspirtech training software I decided to write my own review for the 2011 Fundamentals course.

I purchased the SolidWorks Fundamentals 2011 course and instead of the DVD I chose the direct download version from Inspirtech.com as I have high-speed internet and didn't want to wait for shipping, the download file took a little over an hour to complete. After downloading I installed SW Fundamentals 2011 and started up SolidWorks. To my surprise the 2011 training was added to a toolbar inside of SolidWorks directly. Which means that I can access the training at the same time using I am using SolidWorks while I follow along which was very cool and helpful.

The software interface is easy to use and when you play the videos they pop up in a separate window that can be moved and resized about the monitor. This allows you to use the training and SolidWorks at the same time with only one monitor.

I saw a user gave this training dvd a one star a few weeks back while I was studying for the CSWA and had made a mental note to come back and report my result. I just passed the CSWA on 10/5/2012 with a perfect score 240/240.

The instruction videos were of tremendous help as I have zero experience with SolidWorks before (nor any drafting experience). In a couple weeks, I was able to watch the instruction videos, do a ton of practice and pass the test. I did use just about all of the 3 hours SolidWorks gave to take the test. Even though I knew the material, it takes me awhile to shift between the different views to get the dimensions I needed.

I did find some minor typos and feel the videos could be improve with smoother transition between one videos to the next, but overall it does what it says it would do which was to teach me the fundamentals of SolidWorks.

I highly recommend this training videos to anyone serious about learning SolidWorks and is new to the software. Don't expect miracle. As with anything, you will need to sit and practice to get better. I am going back to the section on Design Tables to refresh and plan on getting the CSWP once I feel comfortable.

Good luck

First, it is not a book - but a DVD. Second, there is no way that a person can learn enough information from this product (DVD) to pass the SolidWorks CSWA exam if they are not a avid SolidWorks user. Buyer beware; a great job for marketing 101. It sounds like they also sell use cars driven by little old ladies.

One review wrote, "There were some hiccups though that I ran into while going through the lessons. There were a few misspelled words or typos that I found throughout a couple of the lessons which leads me to believe that the editor or proof reader didn't catch them before releasing the DVD."

He was being very nice (too nice). I also located a lot of mistakes, misspellings, past command structure, tools, and menus from previous SolidWorks versions (2010 / 2099) along with a damaged DVD, and sections of the lessons in key areas which were left out (do we need to ASSUME). I wrote this experience off as a disaster. A DVD will never replace a technical book. For me it's having a well written book with an incorporated DVD to enhance the learning process and experience. Another key are; have the book and DVD reflect the current version of SolidWorks. This DVD does not. It also covers poor design techniques and does not follow any ANSI standards.

PS: and after reading other reviews on this product, I would preferred that the people that work (friends, etc.) at this company do write reviews against mine to bright the ranking up on this product. Watch they will. Sometimes the truth needs to be told.

I don't often write reviews... but I purchased this product based on the great reviews the 2010 product has. With a lot of lousy stuff out there, I feel it is my duty to encourage others to choose this product... it lives up to all of the previous reviews!

Over the years I have had to learn of lot of new CAD applications... I have had a lot of books, and taken a lot of classes but none have compared to this. It was like taking a class but being able to pause and rewind the teacher. The are engaging throughout and unlike other video systems I have used... I didn't get board with the videos even after 14 hours. In fact.. I wanted it to keep going!

On one occasion I was having trouble creating a part from the hands on exercise so I E-mailed Inspirtech. They got back to me that day and help me out. Turns out it was my fault. If I had watched the video again I would have noticed that my question was answered. But, they took the time on the phone to help me anyways. That is unheard of these days.

I can't say enough how happy I am... And now I am a CSWA too!
