5.0 out of 5 stars If you want to learn detection theory get this book.
This book presents the fundamental ideas in detection theory (Hypothesis testing for you math types) in a very accessible way. It was one of the few textbooks I could read without feeling like I should be taking a class to go along with it. First the book starts off with a short chapter explaining what detection theory is. This chapter is so well written and illustrated...

2.0 out of 5 stars "Textbook Binding" is rather poor
After buying a book for about $80 I expect to get value for my money. I was extremely disappointed to note that just one week after using the textbook (and solving exactly one homework assignment of 4 problems) the pages began to come out. I have seen other friends who bought the book have a similar problem. The contents of the book deserve 4 stars. But the lousy binding...

This review is from: Fundamentals of Statistical Signal Processing, Volume 2: Detection Theory (Hardcover)
This book presents the fundamental ideas in detection theory (Hypothesis testing for you math types) in a very accessible way. It was one of the few textbooks I could read without feeling like I should be taking a class to go along with it. First the book starts off with a short chapter explaining what detection theory is. This chapter is so well written and illustrated that I've used it to explain to my friends what it is I do at work. This type of very good introduction is repeated at the start of each chapter. But I would have to say the strength of the book is in the examples. All the main ideas are demonstrated by examples that have been worked out in detail. There are several of these worked out examples per chapter and they range form simple, to the kinds of problems you may face in real life. I keep this book on my desk at work, and on more than on occasion I looked liked a genius by using this book and it's examples to solve a problem in minuets that looked like it would take hours (or days).

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, but a tad lacking, March 24, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Fundamentals of Statistical Signal Processing, Volume 2: Detection Theory (Hardcover)
I am an undergraduate senior using this book for a graduate-level Detection & Estimation Theory course. This is an excellent book and is very easy to follow, unlike Poor's which is too mathematical and hard too read. However, this book does make many references to Vol. 1, the Estimation Theory, so you almost have to get both books to get a full understanding. Also, some of the problems are not always workable based on the theory given. Overall, though, I do recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best textbook in Estimation Theory, November 18, 1999

This review is from: Fundamentals of Statistical Signal Processing, Volume 2: Detection Theory (Hardcover)
Steven Kay has done a superb job. His coverage of different aspects of estimation theory make this book an excellent reference for the working engineer, as well as a great college textbook. All the topics are well covered, there are meaningful examples that apply the theory to different aspects of signal processing, and the problem sets are very useful. Also, the addition of small appendixes to the end of some chapters is very unique. They usually contain additional material to clarify a method presented in the chapter or discuss some mathematical result. A book that can balance theory with practical applications is not easy to find, especially in a difficult area like statistical signal processing. This is the ultimate guide to estimation theory and its applications.

It is a nice book about signal detection. The content is well organized. It combines application with theory and put complex theoretical staff in appendix so it is easy to follow. In particular, I like the beautiful language in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best out there., December 1, 2007
This review is from: Fundamentals of Statistical Signal Processing, Volume 2: Detection Theory (Hardcover)
An amazingly well organized and well written book. Signal estimation is well broken down in to parts. Every theory discussion is followed with an example, which make sure you completely understand it. Not many books out there have examples illustrating the theoretical discussions, which in my opinions makes this book stand out from the rest.
The book thrives on simplicity in its discussions, which doesnt mean this is a book for beginners. Just that this book can be used from beginners to advanced users if you want to clearly understand the theory and derivations. Highly recommend the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply good..!, June 26, 2007
This review is from: Fundamentals of Statistical Signal Processing, Volume 2: Detection Theory (Hardcover)
Well..would say a life time reference book for me...bt as chapters progress it assumes you have the other twin too .. (estimation theory)..better invite them to your shelf together to get a feel ..!
But this costly book comes with a worst-ever-binding..which appears to be firm from outside...Initially I thought it was only me who suffered from this ..but it seems many has expressed the same view...papers coming out day-by-day

3.0 out of 5 stars low quality paper, October 16, 2006
This review is from: Fundamentals of Statistical Signal Processing, Volume 2: Detection Theory (Hardcover)
For a $90+ book the quality of paper is low and binding very bad. On the very day I got the book from Amazon, I had papers coming out unstuck. The paper used is not archival quality, typically expected for such high priced books. I am very disappointed. I have no doubts the text material is great and will be valid for a long time but I am sure the paper will not last even a few months.
