Book Description

0470124229 978-0470124222 December 21, 2007 1
A comprehensive introduction to turbomachines and their applications

With up-to-date coverage of all types of turbomachinery for students and practitioners, Fundamentals of Turbomachinery covers machines from gas, steam, wind, and hydraulic turbines to simple pumps, fans, blowers, and compressors used throughout industry. After reviewing the history of turbomachinery and the fluid mechanical principles involved in their design and operation, the book focuses on the application and selection of machines for various uses, teaching basic theory as well as how to select the right machine for a specific use.

With a practical emphasis on engineering applications of turbomachines, this book discusses the full range of both turbines and pumping devices. For each type, the author explains:
*

Basic principles
*

Preliminary design procedure
*

Ideal performance characteristics
*

Actual performance curves published by the manufacturers
*

Application and appropriate selection of the machine

Throughout, worked sample problems illustrate the principles discussed and end-of-chapter problems, employing both SI and the English system of units, provide practice to help solidify the reader's grasp of the material.

More About the Author

William W. Peng is a professor of mechanical engineering at California State
University, Fresno. He obtained a degree of BSME from National Taiwan University in 1965; MS and PhD in Aeronautics & Astronautics from Stanford University in 1968 and 1973 respectively.

After working 8 years for private industry, both turbomachines manufacturer and user, he started the academic career with Texas A&M University in 1981. Then he moved to California State University in 1984, where he taught the senior turbomachinery and graduate gas turbine classes. He has extensive experiences in the design and application of centrifugal pumps and fans/blowers through the consulting work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, April 12, 2009
This review is from: Fundamentals of Turbomachinery (Hardcover)
This is one of the worst textbooks that I have ever used. It is full of errors. Many of the example problems are not thorough enough to get the full understanding of what he is explaining. Too many shortcuts, many symbols used, but not defined.
