I'll have to admit, I'm primarily going by my parents' reaction to dominoes in general (they're mad about the game, and have been for years), but I can well imagine them being useful in teaching kids number/object recognition and strategic planning.

As for durability, this is the first time I've purchased from this particular brand, and gave it as a present to my folks at Christmas, so I haven't had the chance to use the tiles personally, but I'm presuming that anything the Professional Domino Association (!) would use will probably stand up to even my parents' mad, slap-dash approach to the game (like two backgammon masters; scary to watch!), which damaged their previous set so badly they needed a new one...given the substantial heft to the set in its tin box, I'm guessing the pieces will hold up for a bit.
