New & Improved Isn't Always Better !!!,

I just bought this set because I remember as a child playing this, but I was soarly disappointed in the changes that have been made over the years. I guess due to safety reasons they replaced the metal arrow that would actually stick in the ground where it landed with a more rounded , bulbous type arrow that now when hits a bulls eye bounces out instead of sticking in the ground. The bulls eye rings are made of a thin rubbery plastic like fish tank air tubing instead of a hard more durable plastic like in the good old days. It was still a blast to play, especially if your a young one who isn't lucky enough to have experienced the old timey metal types, but as an older
generation the changes were to be a bit of a disappointment.

The supplier was wonderful but this is certainly nothing like the original Jarts game...pretty boring as this new style doesn't stick in the ground to get points...probably would be better to just throw colored rocks in a circle...

I don't mind the change in the tips from metal to rubber; however, as one of the other reviewers points out, the jarts do bounce quite a bit now. What bother me is the moving vanes (what I would call the fletching on an arrow) on the jart. The original lawn darts that I had in the 70s were one solid piece of plastic with the metal tips. The new jarts have vanes that slide up and down the shaft. The problem with moving parts is that they break. And after one session of play with my friend and his nine year old daughter, guess what? One of the darts now comes apart (the vanes leave the shaft) on nearly every throw. Given that the toy is meant for family play, I think I should expect that they last more than one session with a nine year-old.

The kids enjoy the game and that is the major criteria. I used the old version when I was a kid, so I am a little more critical. This version doesn't have the point that will stick in the ground (the old version was outlawed because some felt it would stick in the body as well).
This version you may need some new rules- what do you do if the jart slides under the circle? The short story is my kids like the game and I don't see a safety risk to the new version. I would buy it again.

I read all the reviews that said that the old darts were better because they had a metal point that stuck in the grass. So I will modify the darts to put a metal point on them so they will stick in the grass and I bought them anyway.

We have enjoyed these jarts. They are what I expected. I like the old ones better, but these are fun anyway.

I grew up with the original "dangerous" jarts and am not going to spend $[...] to buy them online from a collector, but I missed the game and have children and am always looking for different outside games to play and this one was a WINNER. As I said I miss the originals, but these are a good substitute. There is a decent weight to the tips of them and they fly pretty well. The only difference is that they don't stick in the ground like the originals (like a dart)so they bounce instead and usually bounce out of the circle when you hit it, so you have to aim before it and bounce it in, but it's ok!

We had the original Jarts. They were 100@ better. They had a heavy metal/metal-like tip that stuck in the ground. You can see more clearly who won the point (when they're close together) w/o losing the place of landing. They also had thicker plastic wings. We had the first set for approximately 19 yrs and never had anyone hit by the jart. You just have to make sure everyone is paying attention before it's thrown. It's a shame that because of some, who obviously weren't paying attention, they had to change the product.

Not a good product. It's the first product I've ever HOPED would just simply break. Not in any way like the original Jarts (which I think was banned for being dangerous). These darts have no points; they sail inelegantly through the air, and only for a short distance; it's impossible to toss the jarts more than about 15-20 feet; and, finally, they have no points at all, to speak of, so they just kind of land in a dead weight flop on the ground.
On the other hand, they can be got for [...], so if your kids are very young, they just might be fooled for awhile into thinking this is a pretty cool toy.

Fun:
------------ Alas, these Jarts are but pale ghosts of lawn darts. They were sort of fun to throw, but the drama of the high toss followed by the satisfying thunk! is completely missing. Their range is also shorter, and they bounce after they hit, rendering scoring imprecise. Hence, these Jarts end up being a minor novelty: after maybe ten tosses, it is time to move on to some other lawn game. Durability: ------------ One of the darts broke within the first few tosses, after a glancing blow against concrete steps. |
