Editorial Reviews

The 1980s retro horror classic! Young and easily frightened 16-year old Heather is called to stay with her grandmother in the hopes of helping her turn an old funeral home into a bed-and-breakfast. But strange happenings and unexplained murders around the home quickly make this vacation spot a ""dead-and-breakfast"" - with no answers as to who or what is causing all the death. Well-executed gloomy thriller in the Hitchcock vein.

I received my copy of Funeral Home which I must say I find to be a very under rated lost gem from the 80's with excellent atmosphere and a creepiness that is sustained throughout the film. That being said, I have been consistently dissapointed with the various dvd editions that have been released for this film because they are obviously merely vhs imports with no remastering. I was hoping this release would be an official remastered release with good picture/audio quality. Unfortunately, I immediately realized from the opening credits that this is one of the worst transfers I have ever had the displeasure of viewing. The picture quality is at times unwatchable with large red lines appearing across the picture, particularly in the night scenes.

This movie deserves an official re-mastered release. It is an exceptional entry from a nostalgic era when horror movies were a pleasure to watch due to their creepy atmosphere and errie music, even despite their low budget origins. I long for the day when a reputable company can rescue this title from the public domain and release an official version that fans of this film deserve.

The only positive thing I can say about this purchase is that at least the company used the original poster for the dvd cover art. This has always been one of my favorite classic covers from the 80's and I wish more companies would realize that true collectors of these films would like to have the original cover art rather than the cheap looking re-done covers many films utilize these days to make the films appear more modern but only accomplish dissapointing the true fans who purchase these titles in the first place.

1.0 out of 5 stars CAN YOU SAY, POOR QUALITY RELEASE! March 24, 2012
Format:DVD
It's evident once the film starts, that no amount of restoration or effort was put into this DVD release from CFS; the company responsible for the horrible bootleg video/audio quality. I'll admit that I own some poor quality budget DVD's, but this has to be one of the worst I've ever seen. The source material for this release must have come from a worn out bootleg VHS, collecting dust in the basement of a Funeral Home.

The video image is plagued with speckling, debris and annoying lines that fill the TV screen throughout the film, way to much for any fan of this movie to tolerate. The colors are pretty much washed out and the print is way too dark. The movie is barely viewable in my opinion and this review should serve as a warning to any fan of this movie. Buyer Beware!

I've always regarded "Funeral Home" as an underrated creepy Canadian classic from the 1980's and I was super excited when my copy finally arrived. When I looked on Amazon on the day of release, it said the film was out of stock; I thought this was a good thing. Sadly my excitement quickly went away the second I put the DVD into my player. Some things should remain buried and this poor effort from CFS is one of them. My copy is already on its way back to Amazon.

1.0 out of 5 stars CFS Releasing rips us off again! March 29, 2012
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
WARNING!!! Do not buy this DVD!!!

Funeral Home is an awesome film, but this DVD makes 10th generation bootleg copies look great. The rip-off artists at CFS Releasing have simply copied the old Paragon pan-and-scan VHS video; you can even see the copy protection line travel from the bottom to the top of the screen throughout the entire film. Seriously!!!

There is no detail on the actors' faces; they just look like formless blobs. When there is any action on screen, the picture jumps and looks like a double, triple and quadruple exposure, especially during the night scenes.

Companies like CFS and Cheezy Flicks should be banned from selling their cruddy products on Amazon or at least forced to place labels on their DVDs warning potential buyers about the terrible picture quality.

I wonder if there is an online Better Business Bureau that I can report CFS Releasing to?

1.0 out of 5 stars OBSCENELY BAD 2012 TRANSFER FROM CFS March 24, 2012
By OChrist
Format:DVD
The few charms of this 1979 regional horror film (shot in rural Canada) by talented schlockmeister Bill Fruet are totally undermined by THE worst presentation of any commercially released title I have ever seen... EVER! Not only is it taken from a VHS tape, it looks like it was from a blurry, smeared, sludgy, ghost-ridden third-generation copy. I paid six bucks for this and it can't even be donated to a thrift store-- I just couldn't foist it on any unlucky retro-horror fan. SO it went right into the trashcan. Amazon should pull this from sale and refuse to do business with this rip-off outfit. Times are too tough and technology too advanced for this to even be remotely acceptable. Take a clue from Blue Underground, Synapse or Code Red and treat these movies with a little respect!

4.0 out of 5 stars 1 1/2 star for the DVD and 4 stars for the flick! April 12, 2012
Format:DVD
That's right, other reviewers are correct about the CFS DVD release for Funeral Home... I actually didn't have to order this DVD and came across it while shopping at Hastings Entertainment (awesome place!), so therefor it was VERY tempting for me to go ahead and buy it lol! Yes, I read the reviews and believed the warnings from those reviews to be true, but since I love this flick... it still got the best of my judgement in what not to buy haha. I do have the Synergy Entertainment DVD-R release that you can buy here on Amazon and its PQ is surprisingly somewhat better than this DVD!! Like I said, it is a 4 star Horror flick, imo, but I'll be kind and give this DVD release 2 stars simply because it was released with its original cover art and despite the crappy PQ I still had a good time watching it. I agree, Funeral Home needs respect and I, as do other Horror fans, would like to see this flick get a great DVD (or Blu-ray!), treatment! :) For now I have both Synergy and CFS editions placed in one double-disc keepcase haha.
