5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishingly, what a record.
What can I say that has not already been stated in the reviews before me? I picked this record up on impulse after hearing their acoustic version of "Bury the Tooth of the Hydra and a Skeleton Army Will Arise" which by the way is excellent as well, and I was blown away by what I heard. I don't make many purchases, especially on impulse, but this is definately one of the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I had never heard of this band, but Dawn of the Dead kept playing on Pandora for me. I really liked it and decided to buy this album. Turns out that was the only good song on the whole thing. Despite a bunch of kitschy titles this is really nothing but sad-girl angst rock; including brilliant songs about how the singer is sad about life, sad about the boy and sad because...

What can I say that has not already been stated in the reviews before me? I picked this record up on impulse after hearing their acoustic version of "Bury the Tooth of the Hydra and a Skeleton Army Will Arise" which by the way is excellent as well, and I was blown away by what I heard. I don't make many purchases, especially on impulse, but this is definately one of the best buys I have ever made. This is new, this is exciting, this is aggressive, this is sweet, this is provacative, this is just simply amazing. The idea of of mixing the progression of punk rock with science fiction themes with a dab of metal, not to mention a little Opera as lead singer Ryan has quite a range in her voice. I could point out what my favorite tracks are, but why bother? I love them all, simply they all have a warm merit to them and the pace never slows down everytime you spin this record, but it always changes. The last track on the cd is worth the price alone as it's a moving song where each member just hits their mark, Ryan sings her heart out and I'm so glad I made this purchase, be smart. Buy this, buy two so when your first cd burns out on you playing so much, you'll be ahead of the game and have a second copy ready.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing debut, February 26, 2005

This debut album, "The Funeral Sciences" from Schoolyard Heroes is nothing short of awesome. Combining aggressive punk, sci-fi, and metal, Schoolyard Heroes are yet another great young band out of Seattle. Ryann, the lead singer, has a truly amazing voice, showing off her range of many of the 12 tracks. Bassist Jonah lends his own voice to most of the songs, which provides a nice contrast.

I am deeply in love with this CD. Standout tracks include "The Mechanical Man vs. The Robot From Outer Limits", "Dawn of the Dead", "Blood-Spattered Sundress", "Attack of the Puppet People", "Contra"...well, they're all just fabulous! The lyrics are pretty dark, which I adore.

Anyway, this CD is incredible, and if you ever get a chance to see Schoolyard Heroes live, GO! It's one heck of an amazing show.

5.0 out of 5 stars a band you can believe in, September 9, 2004
This review is from: Funeral Sciences (Audio CD)
this is my favorite seattle band, and one of my favorites, full-stop. i saw them play a local show, and i remember thinking "i don't know exactly what the hell that was, but it was amazing and i love it". i went right over and bought their cd and the band signed it.
i can't tell you how many times i've listened to this album- the songs are very creative/original while still being very enjoyable to listen to. i recommend this cd to anyone, but especially to anyone like me when i first heard them, was not hearing anything exciting in the music industry, you can get excited about this band- cool people, great songs, and tons of talent. Lead singer Ryann is a classicaly trained vocalist in a rock band, the result is absolutely amazing- you'll love it.

Ever since I heard them for the first time, I have always wondered why a band like Schoolyard Heroes isn't world famous?? These guys truely rock, and their album is amazing. Their lyrics are all sci-fi and B-horror movie themed with beautiful female leads and awesome edgy screams from their bassist. This is NOT emo though. This is jump-up-and-down Rock. It almost reminds me of a poppier sounding System of a Down. No, scratch that. Schoolyard Heroes are much better than SOAD.
The only exception to ths greatness of this CD is the horribly cheesy track "Boyfriend". The style of song sounds like an MxPx ballad, and the lyrics are just rediculous. "I hate your f#$%ing boyfriend/I wish that he were dead". Is this some sort of teenage girl anthem? It just did not fit well at all with the rest of the CDat in my opinion. Other than that, the CD is worth every cent you pay.
The track "The Mechanical Man vs. The Robot From the Outer Limits" alone is worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow.. Just Wow.., December 31, 2003
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Funeral Sciences (Audio CD)
The reason i first heard about this band was one night I was listening to the radio and I heard them talking about this great band called "Schoolyard Heroes". So, I thought what the hell and relaxed in my chair waiting for a good listen. I was not dissapointed. The song that they played was called "Bury the Tooth of the Hydra and the Skeleton Army will Arise" and I loved it. So i decided to check them out over the web on their website www.schoolyardheroes.com where you can download two tracks off of their CD. I loved both of them as well. So, finially I picked up their CD and I was not dissapointed either. Its quite amazing, the lead singer Ryan Donnelly's voice has such an amazing range and a beautiful voice its frightening. And Bass player Jonah adds a little extra zing to almost all of the songs by adding his own touch to them with his screaming great Bass. Probably the most melodic moment on this CD is on the song "Blood Spattered Sundress" where the lead singer Ryan adds lots of emotion to the vocals and the lyrics are very humerous in places. I guess my only complaint with this CD is in some moments the guiter player goes on insane riffs that seem like they have nothing to do with the song at all (as seen on Blood-spattered Sundress). But other than that all the songs are amazing. Not to mention that they are local seattle band, which makes them even more cool AND the limited edition glow in the dark artwork (although i am not sure amazon has it). If you have any doubts about their songs, go to www.schoolyardheroes.com and download the two tracks from their website. But be forewarned, this CD isn't a quiet little piece of music. Its loud, so if you don't like louder music, please don't buy this becasue you will only be dissapointed. But the bottom line, this CD is amazing, no doubt about it. So if you want to support local music and you want to treat your ears to some great music, but this record.

5.0 out of 5 stars TERROR!!!, November 9, 2003
This review is from: Funeral Sciences (Audio CD)
This is a fantastic album made by some really cool folks. If you're into science fiction, horror movies, punk, metal, fun, pizza, etc. you will like it a lot. If you are into being a stupid jerk you will probably hate it. Freaking swell!

5.0 out of 5 stars AWESOME. Buy this CD. Support this band!, October 30, 2003
This review is from: Funeral Sciences (Audio CD)
Anyone who does not like the Schoolyard Heroes does not like music. Period. This band is Awesome. So awesome in fact, the only thing better than a Schoolyard Heroes CD is a live SYH performance. The songs are catchy, hard, and frankly, they just rock. If you like Tsunami Bomb, you'll like Schoolyard Heroes more. Ryann (lead vocals) has a great voice and Jonah (bassist) goes crazy and is still somehow able to sing and play bass better than most. Definitely buy this CD. There is no way you can be disappointed.

I really enjoyed it. I love how they're really synchronized and Ryann's (lead singer) voice. They kind of remind me of AFI but with a little different lyrics. I wasnt much for the darker lyrics but if thats your thing you will definitly love this. Still a very good CD.
