5.0 out of 5 stars Full of fiendishly good fun!, July 17, 2000
By
Hearse Queen "grimrides" (northern california, usa) - See all my reviews
I was given my original copy of this book when I was about 11, by an uncle with a "unusual" sense of humor. I loved it! Lots of illustrations and text jammed in an unusual comic book style layout made this quite the fun book for me to read.

You get to follow Fungus, a bogeyman, on his daily duties as a Bogeyman and experience the complex Bogeyman world. Peek into his bathroom and see hygiene products like "pepsomuck" and "eau de colon". Some of his daily duties include waking sleeping babies, making things go bump in the night, and scaring vicars in cemeteries. You also get to learn Bogey history, anatomy, and more. It's quite complex and fun and provided me with hours of entertainment as a child.

I recently got hit by a wave of nostalgia, and purchased it here at Amazon as I couldn't find my old copy. My 13 year old daughter who is a Harry Potter fan (which also has complex characters) has promptly taken posession of this new copy and has trotted off with it.

I fear I wont get it back.

Fellow Fungus fiends will also want to check out "Father Christmas" by Raymond Briggs, available here on Amazon, which chronicles Santa's day to day life in a most hilarious way!

5.0 out of 5 stars From a cat named Fungus, June 29, 2000
By A Customer
I named my cat (who's now 12) after reading this excellent book many years ago. I gave the book to a friend and am now frantically searching for a copy (yes it's that good/funny)

I had quite a crush on Fungus and always hoped I'd marry a man like him-I did!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fungus is funny!, November 5, 1999
By
Keith Grosvenor (Melbourne Australia) - See all my reviews
I was introduced to Fungus by a work associate and was instantly hooked. Humour that makes kids laugh or gasp, and adults either laugh or gag!

A pop-up book was also released which shows great detail on toilets, underwear and the other key things in the bogey household.

This book is recommended for those who like their humour slightly off centre.

Also recommended is 'Unlucky Wally', which is directed to an older audience. Adults will certainly find similarities with real people they know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fungus rules, July 10, 2001
By
Skyboy (Auckland, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
Fungus the Bogeyman is one of the funniest, richest, not to say murkiest, children's books I know. The detail of Bogey life is brilliantly conceived and illustrated (the contents of a Bogey bathroom shelf alone are worth the price of the book), and the guiding story of Fungus' own vague existential doubts about Bogey life are a delicious parody of some much more heavy-handed English fiction. Raymond Briggs is a master (see also his two books for adults "While the Wind Blows", about nuclear war, and "Ethel and Ernest" about his parents lives).

5.0 out of 5 stars Nothing quite like it.......hysterical!, August 4, 1999
By A Customer
This was my favorite book as a kid. It's written in comic book text. You must have an incredible sense of humor to truly appreciate this book. Join Fungus the Bogeyman as he slips into his wet, slimy clothes & lurks through the night doing only things that the bogeyman can do (giving people boils as they sleep) and even meet his slimy, little bogeyman family. Disappointed this is out of print. If anyone knows where I can get a copy, please let me know! Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant and suitably revolting comic strip book on a day in the life of a bogeyman, January 2, 2007
By
Keith Joseph (West Berkshire, England) - See all my reviews
'Repulsive but none the less compulsive'. This classic Raymond Briggs book hasn't got a real storyline. It's more like an comic strip encyclopedia on the life of bogeymen (Fungus) and bogeywomen (wife Mildew) and their bogeychildren. The book just charts a day in the life of a bogeyman, who it seems, exists merely to torment us 'Drycleaners'. Briggs richly illustrated study of bogeydom delights in all things revolting, slimy, putrid, and lavatorial, and even raises deep questions on the meaning of Bogeydom life. The book is filled with visual and literary gags, e.g. hidden on Mildrew's bathroom shelf there's 'FemStench' perfume which is real Eau de Toilete (toilet water), plus you finally find out what Great Aunt Ada Doom of Cold Comfort Farm really saw in the woodshed as a child (and it was something nasty). This book would be of interest to any kid over 8, boys might go for it at an earlier age than girls - although be warned it's not suitable for sensitive parents. It's ideal for teenagers and young adults, who will appreciated the sophisticated humour more. So if you ever wondered what makes the bogeyman hiding under your bed tick, get this superbly illustrated and funny book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun and gross jokes., September 8, 2006
By
I've loved this book for years, and actively sought it out in my adulthood to own. The book is filled with everything from gross visual jokes and puns, to the deep philosophical questions every Bogey must have. It's ingenius and unique. Worth buying for a creative or visually stimulated child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wickedly delightful, September 25, 1999
By A Customer
Children will love it, dads secretly admire it, mums will abhor it...It's rude, with amazing attention to detail. An exceedingly high "gross" factor. When will he write another???

5.0 out of 5 stars Putridly Hilarious!, December 5, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Fungus the bogeyman (Paperback)
I first obtained this objectionable work almost 20 years ago as a teenager, (my bent father thought it would appeal to my visceral sense of humour) and, I would say, it is still one of the funniest and memorable books I have ever read. Unfortunately, I lent it to one of my more unreliable friends who promptly lost it and have not been able to replace it. If you can get it, read it with an empty stomach and savour with relish, every disgusting and oozing phrase that Mr Briggs is so capable of conjuring up. Fungus is a Legend!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books EVER., October 10, 2001
By

When I was about four or five, a bookmobile drove near our house way back in the boonies. Every single time (and I do mean EVERY time), I would check out this book. About ten years ago, the bookmobile stopped coming around, and I haven't seen this book since. Today, when browsing around, I saw this and instantly knew that I had to have it once more. I've been looking for a very long time, and it has been found. A WONDERFUL book.
