Editorial Reviews

Channeling pop bliss through their trademark lock-tight, turn-of-the-century, bang out a beat on anything that can take it approach, The Funhouse, (operative word: fun) which is soon-to-be-released on United For Opportunity, is exemplary of a band on the high road to musical perfection. The listener closes their eyes and can taste the bacchanalia and join the fete. Tunes like "Raise The Dead," the record's single, drive the point home with impressive lift, powered by soaring crescendos and inspired gang vocals, not to mention a lyric that invites the deceased to join in the fun. "Mexico" is a dark road ramble that will, at the very least, make you wanna dance around the room, if not run off yourself. "Candy" betrays the writer's addiction to the sweet confections that sounds like Vaudeville, but feels like The Beatles' "Savoy Truffle." And on it goes, the perfect soundtrack for your trip through the tunnel and into the light. If this album can't raise the dead, nothing will.

I discovered the New York-based "Thieves" a few years ago at the Philly Folk Festival, where this then-unknown band had the crowd of 9,000 attendees (and me!) dancing to their music. Since then their two previous CDs have not been too far from the top of my rotating CD pile. I was thrilled when I heard this new album was out and it will join the others in my collection.

This newest album is a "concept album", meaning that the songs are connected by some interesting - what should I call them? - sound effects. The title of the album pretty much sums up the theme: You pays your money and you step inside, never quite knowing what to expect. After about 50 minutes of entertainment, you leave saying: "That was fun! I want to do it again!".

The five-piece band is headed by the team of Fuzz and Carrie, who wrote all dozen songs on the album. You'll have to go to their website (and then you still will need to look harder) to see photos of this band. The attractive graphics or the album have nary a photo of them. The enclosed booklet does, thankfully, have the lyrics so you can follow along, though you still may not be able to make sense of many of them. These are just fun song, nothing serious here. (After all, we are in a FUN house, right?)

So what's in store for you? Well, the band describes its music as gypsy swing but I'd also say that on a track like "So I'm Going to Eat You", it borders on "gypsy rock". But, whatever you call it, this violin, ukulele and string bass music will get under your skin (positively) and have you dancing. Wanna see? Sample the lead off track (after the short "intro") "Live Forever and see for yourself.

More people need to know about this band! They are talented, fun, freaky and so amazing to see live. This CD is my favorite of theirs and my kids love it too. We have two copies, one for the car and one at home, so we are never without it. The songs are toe-tapping catchy. This CD is a good one for Halloween and Dia de los Muertos, but not limited to. Great for road trips! If you like great independent music, not the mainstream radio stuff, toss a little support their way and get awesome music in return....It's a win-win!

Although the gypsy jazz sound that genre-fies Caravan of Thieves can be trapping this record really does not sound much like their debut. The title would suggest otherwise but the record is a little darker. Death, addiction & dispair are sprinkled in along with a creepy good time. Excellent listen. Thy are great love also. I saw them on this tour.
