superBad FUnkateer,
This review is from: Funk Anthology (Dig) (Audio CD)
if SuperFly met Richard Pryor's Mudbone then He would have Morphed into Johnny "Guitar" Watson. Johnny Guitar watson mixed R&B,Funk,Blues,Pop into a Stew.this Brother knew Groove&Simplicity. He made it all work while maintaining His cool.He was also a One Man band.Played a Variety of Instruments.talk about a Cat changing musical lanes?? back in the 50's&60's Johnny Guitar Watson was a strong Blues Based Cat.but when the Funk of the late 60's&Early 70's ruled Johnny Guitar watson not only got on board, but also brought His own Brand. this collection captures all of His timeless Jams.He willCrack you up,but also make you think. He was a Pre-cursor to Hip-Hop as well.RIP to a Brother who did his talking with His Guitar.

The Best,

This is a very good compilation of JGWs funk work. It is ideal for anyone who wants the best of his various funk albums. There is a lot of humour in his lyrics, underpinned by some very tight and funky grooves, laced with lots of blues and jazz guitar licks. Excellent liner notes on an extensive inside folder with colour photographs. This is an all time favourite for me. I highly recommend it.

I had the DJM lp's Ain't That A Bitch and A Real Mother For Ya' when they came out in the Seventies. I was happy to find this material and other pieces available on a compilation. The liner notes are terrific, too. Enjoy.

I love this collection! All the best examples of "Guitar Funk" can be found within. Plus the lyrics and production of classic funk. Way to much fun! Highly recommended to anyone who wants to hear some great funk, great guitar playing.

Johnny Guitar Watson was a blues player from the 1950s. He had an extremely busy style for the time and genre, and his hit, "Three Hours Past Midnight," was an insperation to one aspiring axeman--a teenage Frank Zappa
Zappa later had Watson as a guest on One Size Fits All. In the 1970s, he recorded bluesy, rich funk. A good portion of this is on this fine collection. Watson plays and sings with his raspy alto over funk played by some ace 70s musicians . This is not the bare bones of James Brown or Stax, but the fleshed out cream of 70s Funkadelic, or for that matter. Zappa's One Size Fits All. Need I say more?

If you are a fan of Johnny Guitar you will not be disappointed. It contains previously unreleased songs that are pretty good. I was looking for the "Best of" I had purchased years ago but discovered this one contains those songs and more. Funk lives.

No one could've put together an better compilation on this legendary funk bluesman. I remember hearing a "Real mutha for Ya" in 76 when it came out and i was hooked on this brotha' from there on/ It was off an 8 track at that when i heard the title album. This is definitely a no brainer purchase for any real fan of blues or soul. And the funny thing is, is that you do not hear his name mentioned that often, if hardly ever.

A man ahead of his time. No wonder he was one of Frank Zappa's Idols.
