A rip-off? Maybe, but an interesting one!,

Buyer Beware! This 3 CD set is a rip-off. Some of the songs are re-records and the stuff by the Commodores and Kool & The Gang are new stuff from later incarnations of the groups. The Sly Stone number sounds like an outtake. Anyway I paid $10 for this at a Used CD store and got what I paid for.
Some of the songs sound genuine : "Clean Up Woman" Betty Wright; "So Tired of Being Alone" Al Green; "And the Beat Goes On" Whispers; "Think" Aretha Franklin (though the sound quality isn't good) & "I Gotcha" Joe Tex. These sound like re-records : Sister Sledge "We Are Family" & "He's the Greatest Dancer", Three Degrees "When Will I See You Again" H. Melvin & Blue Notes "Love I Lost" & "Satisfaction Guaranteed". For some strange reason I like the version of "We Are Family" better than the original. There are several songs by Midnight Star, Calloway & Shalamar that I think are the originals. "Car Wash" by Rose Royce is listed as a "live" version & really isn't that bad. There are quite a few Curtis Mayfield numbers (including one "live" song)and they are quite good. Some songs go way back to the 60's - a very early instrumental by Ohio Players which sounds a little out of tune & a pretty good instrumental by Billy Preston. Anyway, don't spend too much on this, but I'm glad I own it, blemishes and all. It sounds like something I could put on at a party to get my guests dancing. |
