Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of this 1977 album from the renowned, Grammy-winning drummer, performer, producer and songwriter. Funk In A Mason Jar was Harvey's third LP for Arista and provided him with a commercial breakthrough, reaching the Top 40 on the U.S. R&B charts and the Top 10 on the Jazz charts Merry Clayton provided the soulful vocals for 'Till You Take My Love' which has remained popular as a rare groove track in the UK, is considered a '70s R&B classic and was Harvey's highest-charting US single The album included Harvey's compelling eight-minute-plus version of Marvin Gaye's 'What's Going On' (with George Benson on vocals and guitar) and the funky 'Pack Up Your Bags' (featuring EW&F guitarist Al McKay). With an amazing list of star players, the musical cast for the album includes Verdine White (EW&F), David Foster, Mike Porcaro, Phil Upchurch, Ray Parker Jr., the Tower of Power Horns, Dave Grusin, Louis Johnson (Brothers Johnson), Ronnie Foster, Bob James and Tom Scott. 5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth, Sweet and Spicy......., May 19, 2000

A definintive album. Almost seamlessly compressing a band of individual virtuoso performers, into a multi-layerd spiral of funk, fusion and classic jazz. Lucky that CD's dont wear out.

the best of Harvey Mason's solo efforts, simply for having so many top rate solo and studio artist to accompany him. to read the credits it's a who's who of the music world for that time period and "set it free is keeper as well as the classic " what's going on". should be in every audiophiles collection for the back artist alone !!!!

This is a classic and inovative recording. When the Lp came out
side A was soul/R&B, while side B was smooth jazz. It features a who's who list of jazz and R&B artists including: George Benson, Ray Parker Jr and more. The songs are superb and very good listening. George Benson does a beautiful rendition of the classic "What's Going On". "Pack Up My Bags" sounds like the Spinners when they were at their best. Leon Russells "Set It Free" is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard from jazz with vocals. "Till You Take My Love" sounds like the Emotions at their best. This CD is a collectors item in my opinion. Top notch performers. Buy it!!!!!
