5.0 out of 5 stars Smooth, Sweet and Spicy.......
A definintive album. Almost seamlessly compressing a band of individual virtuoso performers, into a multi-layerd spiral of funk, fusion and classic jazz. Lucky that CD's dont wear out.

2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't make the grade
Harvey Mason is a drumkit wizard. A ubiquitous presence in the music industry for the past 40 some odd years his mark has been left on more records than you'd care to count.

With an alluring title like "Funk in a Mason Jar" this one has always been on my radar but never readily avaiable. Thanks to a new Japanese pressing it's here again.

But it...

the best of Harvey Mason's solo efforts, simply for having so many top rate solo and studio artist to accompany him. to read the credits it's a who's who of the music world for that time period and "set it free is keeper as well as the classic " what's going on". should be in every audiophiles collection for the back artist alone !!!!

This is a classic and inovative recording. When the Lp came out
side A was soul/R&B, while side B was smooth jazz. It features a who's who list of jazz and R&B artists including: George Benson, Ray Parker Jr and more. The songs are superb and very good listening. George Benson does a beautiful rendition of the classic "What's Going On". "Pack Up My Bags" sounds like the Spinners when they were at their best. Leon Russells "Set It Free" is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard from jazz with vocals. "Till You Take My Love" sounds like the Emotions at their best. This CD is a collectors item in my opinion. Top notch performers. Buy it!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars How Did Harvey Get This Much "Funk In A Mason Jar?", September 5, 2006
This review is from: Funk in a Mason Jar (Audio CD)
The first reviewer had it ALL WRONG! "FIAMJ" has a great mix of Jazz, Jazz/Fusion, Soul, R&B and of course FUNK!

My favorite tracks are "Till You Take My Love", "Space Cadets", "What's Going On" (featuring George Benson) & "Liquid" (with some of the FUNKIEST Bass playing you'll ever hear by Anthony Jackson!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Preserves, September 20, 2005
This review is from: Funk in a Mason Jar (Audio CD)
Harvey Mason is one of the greatest musical minds on the planet. As a percussionist, he is without a doubt, the best. His precision, style, and energy are unmatched. The aspiring percussionist who may not have heard of Mr. Mason, has a lot to learn. Funk in A Mason Jar is classic 70's music at it best. Set it Free is a dynamic arrangement. Bob James obviously can not seperate from Harvey (Foreplay). Phantasia is the drummer's delight, with Harvey cuttin' loose. Get this project. It should be in every music lovers stack.

But it should either be left alone or sent to a museum somewhere for archiving. If listless disco-funk and poppy soul is your thing and you were sporting an afro or mullett 30 years ago and wanna revisit old haunts, then go for it. If you're a crate-digger type, don't be fooled by titles. Funk in a Mason Jar is, at it's best high-minded disco and at it's worst low-brow funk and even lower as jazz.

Save your money - there's a reason this one was out of print for 20 years.
