About the Artist

Grammy nominated Paul Jackson is the baddest jazz-funk bass player on this planet. A founding member of the Headhunters under Herbie Hancock, Jackson shaped a sound that launched a new direction in jazz-fusion and funk music. FUNK ON A STICK (Backdoor Records) will be Jackson’s second solo release. His first was the critically acclaimed BLACK OCTUPUS (Toshiba EMI Records). This title is still in print. Jackson continues to tour and record with the Headhunters (Verve Records 1998 and Basin Street Records 2003). FUNK ON A STICK features San Francisco bay area vocalist, Tony Adamo on “Hey Lou,” written by Adamo/Stucker. Drummer, James Levi of Oakland, California is also featured throughout the CD. Other artists include Herbie Hancock, Ernie Watts, Rodney Franklin, Mike Clark, Bill Summers, Paul van Wageningen, and many other talented performers. On his new CD release FUNK ON A STICK, Jackson is a true chameleon, ever changing, always exploring and pushing the envelope further into the jazz-funk realm. FUNK ON A STICK infuses rap, jazz and funk. Like a passport to the future, Paul’s new sound continues to make new inroads into the music world. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good Funky Stuff!, May 12, 2006

This review is from: Funk on a Stick (Audio CD)
Paul Jack has been playing music since his days as a Headhunter with Herbie Hancock. Now living in Japan, he continues to perform, this time on his own. In this CD release, Jackson takes a different path in music, taking advantage of Funk & Hip-Hop's popularity. His base style will remind you of another bass legend, Stanley Clarke. The clear cut winner on this CD is the track, "Hey Lou". With vocals by Tony Adamo, it's funky, hip and fun to listen to. I enjoyed the background vocal arrangement on the track. His singing though is not one to write home about as with the track, "Pain". Overall, the CD has enough Funk to satisfy all your needs. It's a good listen to one of the originators of Funk Jazz.

4.0 out of 5 stars In God We Funk, October 24, 2005
This review is from: Funk on a Stick (Audio CD)
Paul Jackson has proved himself manytimes over with his rock solid bass playing. He was, along with Herbie Hancock, Bill Summers, and Mike Clark, an originator of seventies jazz-funk fusion. Here, he touches on his old style and updates it, making a unique blend of old-school funk with newer sounds and reminds us of what can come from letting tradition inform present trends. Though he can play amazing stuff, he never loses sight of his central role in driving the music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paul Jackson Funk On A Sick/ featuring singer Tony Adamo, June 6, 2005

Paul Jackson on bass, vocals and keyboards featuring various artists including Tony Adamo on vocals, James Levi on drums

As a member of the "Headhunters," Paul Jackson was instrumental in the development of Jazz-fusion along with bandmate, Herbie Hancock. This CD pushes the envelope even further with a foray into hard core funk.

The CD leads off with a seven second "Warning" ("boys, I'm gone, please don't try this at home") which then segues into the title cut of "Funk On A Stick" with Jackson driving the melody on bass behind his vocals and a rap lyric by Jorge Guerrero. "Hey Lou" features suave vocalize by Tony Adamo that sets the pattern for this hip tune that has Ernie Watts making a musical statement in the background on saxophone. "Funky Fingers" highlights percussion work by Bill Summers and Mike Clark and Herbie Hancock on keyboards. The funky "Everything You Got" has a hard-driving rhythm with engaging vocals by Paula Johnson punctuated by an experimental bass solo by Jackson. "In God We Funk" expresses the soul of protest with its intense fusion groove and rap vocals. The pace slows down on "Prelude To Pain" with Patrick Brady doing a lovely melodic guitar introduction to the tune "Pain" spotlighting Jackson's vocals filled with tenderness. The final cut is an instrumental reprise of "Funk On A Stick."

This CD is a cornucopia of rhythmically interesting music. Jazz purists may cringe but the open-eared will find much to savor in this effort that is splendidly presented and well worth a listen.
