Afro-beat and Afro-folk from California,
By DJ Joe Sixpack (...in Middle America) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)
This review is from: The Funkiest Man In Africa (Audio CD)
Sila, a Kenyan expatriate living in the SF Bay Area is backed by a loose-limbed, funky band, reviving the original, politically-charged spirit of '70s afrofunk with this earnest set of danceable groove tunes. The long shadow of Fela Kuti hangs over the first half of this album, with a bit of Gil Scott-Heron in there as well... On the last few tracks the band gets a little dubby, slower, and more experimental... and a bit, um, challenging. But folks who like socially-conscious pop and dance music might wanna check these folks out... especially at a live gig! (DJ Joe Sixpack, Slipcue Guide To World Music)
