5.0 out of 5 stars An indication of things to come...., November 1, 1999
By
R. Miller "NY Techno Guy" (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Funky Desert Breaks (Audio CD)
This CD is one of the all time great mixes. It is smooth, energetic, and a great track selection. It is only eclipsed by one thing: The fact that John Kelley's NEXT CD: funkydesertbreaks 2, was and still is simply the best CD dance/energy mix ever. This is still a good starter, and great mix.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the two best cd's I own (the second is FDB2), February 17, 2000
This review is from: Funky Desert Breaks (Audio CD)
This was the cd that I lived a breathed to. It has not and never will leave my cd changer. Kelly will get you in the mood and then build you up so high you won't come down for a week. Repation is NOT the word I would use to describe this cd and while your shopping add funkydesertbreaks2 to you collection, TRUST ME you won't be sorry. Every person that has listened to my cd (including my mom) beg to borrow. Be weary of his newest one though I was completely dissapointed-it just keeps going and going without any funk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD From a classic period in West Coast Rave, November 12, 2004
This review is from: Funky Desert Breaks (Audio CD)
I went to a lot of raves and club events in 95-96 on the west coast, primarly in Los Angeles and San Diego. I heard John Kelley dj A LOT during that period. This set reminds me of nights out in the desert such as the Moontribe raves that were free events that happened every full moon. In fact, Members of Electric Skychurch were among the organizers of the moontribe events, and one of their tracks is in this set.

Most of the artists on this cd are west coast artists that were active in the west coast scene during 95-96. Crystal Method are from Las Vegas. Uberzone is from Los Angeles. The Bassbin Twins are from San Francisco.

These artists were prolific in the scene during this period, and this cd really takes you back. dj voodoo's everybody thinks I'm high was a staple during this era too.

Enjoy this selection, as a sampling of a great period during the west coast sound.

ps, ravecrusader's description of the origins of techno / rave is not exactly accurate. I won't take the time to correct him. Just do some research if you want a better understanding of the history of electronic dance.
