5.0 out of 5 stars An indication of things to come....
This CD is one of the all time great mixes. It is smooth, energetic, and a great track selection. It is only eclipsed by one thing: The fact that John Kelley's NEXT CD: funkydesertbreaks 2, was and still is simply the best CD dance/energy mix ever. This is still a good starter, and great mix.

3.0 out of 5 stars Let's not spread rumors.
Techno did not come from Europe folks, the Moog and its offspring were made here in the good old USA. Those tools were exported and experimented on here and abroad. Some inner city Detroit and Chicago folks put them to use, and so did some folks in Germany, England, ect., back as early as the mid 70's. Who did what first is debatable, but "Techno" the term came...

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the two best cd's I own (the second is FDB2), February 17, 2000
This review is from: Funky Desert Breaks (Audio CD)
This was the cd that I lived a breathed to. It has not and never will leave my cd changer. Kelly will get you in the mood and then build you up so high you won't come down for a week. Repation is NOT the word I would use to describe this cd and while your shopping add funkydesertbreaks2 to you collection, TRUST ME you won't be sorry. Every person that has listened to my cd (including my mom) beg to borrow. Be weary of his newest one though I was completely dissapointed-it just keeps going and going without any funk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD From a classic period in West Coast Rave, November 12, 2004
This review is from: Funky Desert Breaks (Audio CD)
I went to a lot of raves and club events in 95-96 on the west coast, primarly in Los Angeles and San Diego. I heard John Kelley dj A LOT during that period. This set reminds me of nights out in the desert such as the Moontribe raves that were free events that happened every full moon. In fact, Members of Electric Skychurch were among the organizers of the moontribe events, and one of their tracks is in this set.

Most of the artists on this cd are west coast artists that were active in the west coast scene during 95-96. Crystal Method are from Las Vegas. Uberzone is from Los Angeles. The Bassbin Twins are from San Francisco.

These artists were prolific in the scene during this period, and this cd really takes you back. dj voodoo's everybody thinks I'm high was a staple during this era too.

Enjoy this selection, as a sampling of a great period during the west coast sound.

ps, ravecrusader's description of the origins of techno / rave is not exactly accurate. I won't take the time to correct him. Just do some research if you want a better understanding of the history of electronic dance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great, classic CD, June 1, 2004
By A Customer

Ahh, yes, the good old days of raving in Los Angeles is the mid 90's. John Kelley was one of my favorite djs back then because he was the only guy around who was playing breaks. And damn, he played some sick breaks for back then. I still think this CD is awesome, even though the mixing and beat matching are a bit sloppy (although this is an indication that this was actully mixed with turntables and not created in pro tools like so many of today's mixes, which is cool). John Kelley may not be the best DJ ever but I love this CD; especially the first track by Uberzone, and "Everybody Thinks I'm High". Classic!

If you love house, trance, trip hop, and dance you're guaranteed to love this CD. It's desert rave at it's best. If you like this album Funkydesertbreaks II is even better than this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars HIGH QUALITY MIX OF TRANCE AND BREAKS, September 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Funky Desert Breaks (Audio CD)
This CD is one the few cd's that offers decent trance tunes. There is none of the usual mainstream german cheese trance ( I can say that because I am from there originally )just smooth and still uplifting real trance tunes. This LP is propably the only one that offers breaks and trance together in one very decent mix. This is hard to do and can only be done by a pro. This guy is definetly one of the best Dj's I have heard and is with his track selection leading against Keoki and others that mix various styles of electronic music. Moonshines best. I own this lp since a few years now and just heard it again yesterday and said: This one is worth a review even after all that time. This one is a classic and one of the last decent moonshine lp's since mainstream is taking over. SHARPMAKS

While some of these tracks may sound a little old for a few of us, Kelly's mixing is impecabble and there are some genuinely jump-up-and-party tracks on here. Perhaps the pioneering effort of the Funky Breaks sound, this mix is one of the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Time Classic!!, June 26, 2010
This review is from: Funky Desert Breaks (Audio CD)
This album is one of the all time classic and best trance ablums. I've yet to come across that flows and makes transitions as smoothly as this early mix. Unfortunately, this was John Kelley's masterpiece and nothing he has done has compared; not to say that he hasn't made several good albums and he's still amazing to see live, but funkydesertbreaks is an all time great.
