a throwback to another time.......their strongest album....,
By
This review is from: Funky Divas (Audio CD)
What set En Vogue apart from the numerous other "girl groups" of the 1990s, was their ability to blend, with their outstanding vocal abilities and songs that sound like they came straight of MoTown circa 1960. This album is a stellar example of their ability to make us feel like we were truly listening to the best of "old school."
The most outstanding songs worth mentioning include: Track #6 "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" This is one of the slow, sexy tracks that they sing so well. This is actually an old r&b song that was featured in the cult film, SPARKLE, about an all girls group (similar to Diana Ross and the Supremes). Track #8 "Give It Up, Turn It Lose" This is more upbeat, and greatly utilizes their wonderful vocals and expression in a song about getting over a man who is no good. This is timeless music that stands the test of time, more than ten years later. I don't think they have another album that quite measured up to this one.......

Another girl group doomed 2 split, but oh how they sang!,

Of all the girl groups to blossom in the 1990s, this one by far and away was the best at singing (yup, TLC and Destiny's Child might've been more popular but neither group could touch En Vogue voice for voice among group members).
That being said, En Vogue really should get credit for, much like Salt-N-Pepa and Mary J. Blige, blending elements of hip hop, girl power and overwhelming sassy-sexy-soulful femininity into urban music where it hadn't been before. If Mary bridged hip hop to R&B, En Vogue pretty much did the same to that 1950s doo-wop style that was masterfully resurrected and appreciated circa 1991. "(My Lovin')You're Never Gonna Get It," "Free Your Mind" and the remake of "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" are all classic En Vogue flava. I guess groups -- and girl groups in particular -- are doomed to split up when they go on tour and have to hear fans critique everything about them (who's the prettiest? who's the best singer? blah, blah, blah). But unlike so many imitators to come along and try to pimp the En Vogue hip hop/R&B sound, En Vogue really was the real deal. TLC, Destiny's Child and the Supremes are probably the super groups of the 20th Century, but En Vogue blazed a trail that laid the groundwork for two of the aforementioned to follow. Recommended LP.

En Vogue - Funky Divas,

So I was inspired to buy this the other day because lately, I've just been craving some good ol' 90's R&B music, you know? I really wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do. Some songs go on a little too long and there were one or two songs I just didn't care for, like "Hip Hop Lover." But the rest is great and I really enjoyed it. These are some talented women and they can truly harmonize! Unlike another reviewer, I actually enjoyed the spoken word sections and I think they add a lot of personality to the disc. I especially love the little dictionary bit at the end of "What Is Love." I highly recommend this.

This cd is good. I've lost it twice and have always replaced it. En Vogue at their finest.

Is it possible to NOT like 80's hip-hop?,

This review is from: Funky Divas (Audio CD)
That IS a rhetorical question, by the way.
These ladies are so much fun to listen to! "You're Never Gonna Get It" brings me back to my childhood. The rhythms, the inserted rap (before profanity and the "N" word were requirements), the harmonies, the attitude. It makes you happy! Not their best album, but an excellent listen!

En Vogue's sophomore set definitely pushed their popularity into the stratosphere! After achieving great success in the r&b world with their debut, one song from this album FREE YOUR MIND, garnered heightened attention from the MTV crowd and exposed them to new audiences.
En Vogue definitely debuted at a time when there were no girl groups of note in r&b and their stunning 4 part harmonies upped the ante in the game and caused other record labels to scramble to try to find the right combination of young women to rival this group. This is a solid follow-up to their promising debut album and I'd highly recommend it. Their covers of YESTERDAY, GIVIN HIM SOMETHING HE CAN FEEL & HOOKED ON YOUR LOVE are georgeous solely due to their ability to harmonize so well. My other favorites are the tracks that helped push this album into multi-platinum status: MY LOVIN - YOU'RE NEVER GONNA GET IT - timeless classic that sounded like nothing on the radio at that time GIVE IT UP, TURN IT LOOSE - another well constructed mid-tempo track LOVE DON'T LOVE YOU FREE YOUR MIND THIS IS YOUR LIFE

Undoubtedly En Vogue's best work (followed closely by Born To Sing, Masterpiece Theatre and SoulFlower), this album shows that En Vogue is capable of being sassy, sexy, funky, strong, fun, diverse and able to tackle any genre. Their voices never sounded better (check out "My Lovin' You're Never Gonna Get It", "Free Your Mind", "This Is Your Life", "Yesterday" and "Giving Him Something He Can Feel" to name a few) and they seem to have found their nitch and style that suits them best. 'Funky Divas' showed En Vogue for what they are; beautiful, stylist, fashionable, professional singers on the cutting edge who seem perfect! Of all the En Vogue cd's, 'Funky Divas' is one you must have. It embodies what En Vogue is about. Everything from R&B, Rock, Dance, Reggae to Soul - even a Beatles classic is featured on this album - which En Vogue cover effortlessly.
En Vogue. Very possible the best girl group of all time!

When I first purchase this album the first time. It was Exceptional then and it still is . Exceptional and Gifted Group these Ladies rule the early 90's. Some of my favorites Free Your Mind, My Lovin, It Ain't Over till the Fat Lady Sings, just to name a few. Envogues voices all of them work masterfully together they way a head of their time. As far as female groups they rank 5 stars in my book following such groups as Supremes, Labelle, TLC the had allot orginiality and appeal that drew people to them because of the voices and their orignal material. They are trendsetters.
Please go buy this CD. I will buy it again myself. I have the cassette. I need the CD for my collection. I know they came out with a new album hopefully this will be a Great album as well. Go Envogue Go

Funky Divas: En Vogue at their best,

En Vogue's Funky Divas is a great album. I gave the album 4 out of 5 stars because I don't like every song on the CD, but the songs I do like, I really like. En Vogue shows their amazing vocal range, and their impressive harmonizing. The album is very R&B. It includes 1970's remakes "Hooked on Your Love", "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", and "Yesterday", which they did a great job covering. I liked the ad libs these ladies included on the album which include preparing to go onstage and talking to each other about relationships. The songs that were released from the album were some of the best. "Giving Him Something He Can Feel", "Free Your Mind", " "Yesderday" and "Never Gonna Get It" were all releases and are all songs that help make Funky Divas a must have for R&B lovers. THE BEST ON THE CD THE WORST ON THE CD It Ain't Over Til the Fat Lady Sings |
