This is an awesome sounding, high-fidelity CD. The collection of players is diverse. Legends like Reuben Wilson and Charles Earland have some of their newer works included here. This collection of soul-jazz organ players also introduces a couple of relative newcomers to the Hammond B-3 circle. Fabulous offering ...
but only one of it's kind on SACD (Super Audio CD); along with Joey D. and Jack McDuff's, "It's About Time".

The knock against "audiophile" recordings is usually that they give great sound but boring content. That's not the case here!

The sound, on SACD, is full, lush, smooth, detailed, and pulsating. About as close to "being there" as one can get in pre-recorded music. One area where SACDs (and vinyl) can beat regular Redbook CDs in the driving beat. They can get the timing right so it is better connected to one's nervous system.

The content is rocking, upbeat, contagious. While the B-3 organ is the star, other instruments get their licks in too so it is not all of the same thing, all the time. The various artists make for enough just enough variety that the whole is neither repetituous nor discordant.


You can listen carefully, in a quiet room, and enjoy this album or you can put in on during a rowdy house party - works both ways!

I've just about all of High Note's SACD products and look forward to more. They are good value with great production quality and entertaining content, all at a great price.

pretty good organ CD- but not good enough to need 2 copies.

I was having trouble with on line ordering. It is not easy to add a second item to the first ordered and have it stay correct- or even to correct the order. So i ended up with 2 "Funky Organ"!

I attempted to delete and re order but was shipped and billed for 2 "Funky organ"! Now I am beyond 30 day for return!

Bill Heid has one of the best numbers on the CD.

Joey D does well with the Preacher- possibly an older cut that has something to it other than his recent overdone notes stylings. Besides putting on weight I think he is getting bored and just piles on a lot of notes rather than getting emotionally involved in his playing.
