mixing at its best,
By Scott Swanson (Albuquerque, nm United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: FunkyDesertBreaks 2 (Audio CD)
John Kelley was the second techno DJ I discovered right after Doc Martin. What I have since discovered is that there is no other DJ (at least that I've heard) that can make the music more his own than Kelley. He has a way of stretching out one song into another so that the transition points between songs become more interesting than the song itself. A perfect case in point is the last 4 songs on this album especially the long glide from jds' "nineways" into the coffee boys' "nipple fish." "Nipple fish" actually begins two or so minutes before "nineways" has completed, and the mixture of these two songs is so seemless I couldn't tell where they began and ended until I picked up another CD with "nipple fish" on it and realized what Kelley had done. Kelley's stuff isn't always as dancable as most house and trance I've heard, but his breakbeat style on both fdbks seems to have more staying power. There is such a nice variation in songs that you never get bored. Also, because he seems to overlap so much from song to song, the actual songs don't last very long so if you dislike one song you don't have to wait long for the next one. Many trance djs seem to hold onto a song too long until it gets too repetative even for trance. The only problem with Kelley's style is that all four of his Moonshine releases tend to be short for mix CDs (only an hour or so) even though they have 15 songs. Best songs on this particular CD are Underworld's "born skippy," a mindnumbing song that if you close your eyes you may not be able to stop your head from spinning, and the closing 4 tracks, maybe the best stretch of seamless mixed techno songs I've ever heard. This CD does have a few weak spots (dj friction & spice's "you make me feel so good"), but it is still probably as a whole the best Kelley mix. As a sidenote, try listening to Kelley's "Knee Deep" and his transition from Brownie's "fly mutha beatz" into Jack Mackrel's "drum tumbler" and follow the extreme climax as the harder beat takes over but the first song echos distantly in the background reminding you of where you've been as you start down that new path. That is the reason I will never buy another unmixed CD and why Kelley is the master...

Greatest DJ Mix every recorded,
By
This review is from: FunkyDesertBreaks 2 (Audio CD)
I've been listening to Electronic Music(all kinds, Trance, Techno, House, DnB) for 4+ years. I've been buying nearly nothing but DJ mixes and seeing live sets for the last 2 1/2 years. In my listening, I've found this as simply the greatest collection of tracks and mixing I've ever heard. It makes the back of your neck tingle. It makes you smile. It is such high energy that I find it hard to describe. I bore friends trying to explain to them why it's so great, and finally just INSIST that they listen to it a few times. Give it 3 listens, and you'll be hooked. Thank you DJ John Kelley.

Goosebumps,

You have never truly experienced John Kelley's genius until you have heard him live. The first time I got to dance to John Kelley was in the middle of the Mojave Desert about six years ago at a full moon party and he absolutely blew my mind! He continues to amaze me every time I get to hear him and this cd is one of the best cds that I have in my collection in that it is an actual live set from the desert party that he is a resident dj for. Talk about goosebumps and flashbacks! Amazing.

This is without a doubt the all time best thing that I have ever heard in my whole life. Every good thing that has happened in my life can be put to music that is on this cd. It will keep you rollin all night long and feel free to use your continue button on your player, you won't want this one to ever end. I personally guarantee it's absolute perfection. Please Kelly if your out there make another like this one so I can die happy.

Someone once called this one the 'God Father' of mixes...,

I know why Moonshine dubbed this one the God Father of mix cd's...because it is! It's big, dramatic, and ofcourse, PUMPING. If you're into breaks, your cd player won't play this often enough for you. Your amp can't crank it loud enough either, as this one is better 'felt' via a thunderous sound system than merely heard through, say, a discman. If Keoki mixed only breaks, this is what it would probably sound like...

a must have journey,
By A Customer
This review is from: FunkyDesertBreaks 2 (Audio CD)
you can dance to any decent DJ, but it is a rare find when you go on a journey with a DJ. this is absolutely my favorite CD of all time. it is a journey through desert sands, running with the sometimes mournful--more often joyful--wind. breakbeats combined with a touch of acid and hints of trance and techno all coalesce into brilliance. the only way to top the experience of this CD would be to listen to it live in the desert. wish i was there.

Funky Breakbeats at their best,
This review is from: FunkyDesertBreaks 2 (Audio CD)
This is the second release in this series for DJ John Kelley. He is an excellent `Trance' DJ with years of experience behind the mixing board to compliment his talent. This CD was better than the first in the series by a narrow margin. A very narrow margin that is.John Kelley has an amazing ability to take people on a musical journey though electronic funk. This CD showcases him in top form. He is one of the best `Acid Trance DJs' of all time. The best tracks on this CD were #6) Peter Tall vs. Xpando - Tricked; a great example of drum and bass trance, #2) Drop Out - Plastic; this sounds like Anime on acid; and #9) Underworld - Born Slippy; I don't know how to describe this one. On a side note, the version of the `Underworld' song in this CD is like nothing I have ever heard before. I have the album version but this is a different song entirely. This version of this song has graced my "Top 20 Techno songs of all time" list. You may or may not be familiar with this DJ and his work. If you are familiar with him than I would recommend it to you with out hesitation. If you are not than I would advise you check it out first and form your own opinion. Because after all is said and done what do I know anyway? :)

Absolutely Epic,

This is the gold standard for the genre. If you don't have this in your collection it's like saying you like rock with no Zepplin in your collection. It's just the best mix ever recorded...Mozart would have taken notes. It should be taught and presented in class. Buy it, own it, and spend the time to understand why it's genius.Enough said.
