Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Except for Weird Al Yankovic, pop music today suffers from a severe lack of the novelty rock or pop song or spoof. Listening to the Re-Bops unearth the lost treasures of noveltyland from the 1950s and '60s, one can't help but wonder why the form has fallen on such hard times. Here there's not only a first-rate collection of oddball songs but some insights into the period as well: "The Martian Hop" and "Purple People Eater" were hits at the dawn of the space age, light years before there was any talk of alien abductions in the culture. On the flesh front, "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" serves up a tiny bit of body talk. Then there's just the rich throwaway lyrics of "Wooly Bully," "Surfin' Bird," and the truly ga-ga thrills of that real nonsong "Mah Na, Mah Na," whose nonsense lyrics are a cross between scat singing and baby gibberish. Add "Name Game," "Witch Doctor" (made popular again recently by the first Rugrats movie soundtrack), "Yakety Yak," and others, and suddenly old novelties seem brand new again. Loads of fractured fun. --Martin Keller

I ran across this recording in an obscure music catalog and, since my children were ready for something more than Raffi, I ordered it. They loved it! We spent many trip hours in the car singing along at full volume. It was the best holiday present they got that year and eight years later (even though the children are now teens who shop in the alternate section of the music store) we still bring it along on vacations which require automobile travel. This is definitely a must-have classic for kids.

This is better than the garden variety music CDs aimed at kids these days. As many of you know, those Elmo songs (among others) really drive you nuts, but when these get stuck in your head, they aren't bad! And they come from a time when music had a more fun element, before my time even, but so much fun you won't mind singing them with your kids. I have, since the purchase of this CD, searched out other CDs by the Rebops and they are all wonderful. My friends agree and I think you will too.
I bought this when my daughter was only 2 and is now over 3 and we both still love it. It's great on road trips or around town for those "errand days." It cheers everyone up!

My kids (5 and 7) LOVE this. Original hits by original artists that are upbeat and fun. Only wish they included the Monster Mash and I would give it 6 stars!

This was a Christmas present for my grandson, who thinks the songs of the 50's and silly and loves then. His only complaint is that "The Thing" sung by Phil Haris is not on the CD. He will live.

Admittedly, I did not read carefully and therefore it didn't register with me that this was a CD of remakes of the originals. Would have greatly preferred the original versions. But our 14 month old doesn't know the difference -- she dances along to the songs regardless. I think I was just so relieved to find a kids CD that wasn't being sung by a lot of irritating little children that I jumped at it. Too many of these things are children singing. And when they don't pronounce things correctly or have a lisp or whatever, I'd rather my kid not listen to the songs because she'll learn to pronounce things incorrectly. With a Southern mother and a New England father, she'll have problems enough as it is (grin). It does have a decent variety of songs, and I recognize most of them from listening to my parents' records when I was a kid. I was torn between whether to give it 3 or 4 stars because our daughter definitely likes the music, and the lower rating would just be because it would make for easier listening for us if they were the original versions. Overall, it's not a bad CD for the money.

My husband and I remember these songs when we were kids and found it fun and funny to share with our granddaughter. It is amazing to listen to a two year old sing the witch doctor and purple people eater and jump and dance to the music.
Lots of fun and memories.

This cd is pretty good in it includes some good and hard to find funny songs. They are not the original singers though which makes some of the songs much less enjoyable - just not sung very well. Overall though this cd is pretty good and worth buying.
