Book Description

8 and up3 and up
Following her good-times-for-all, smash-hit Boredom Blasters, Helaine Becker serves up another barrel of laughs in this book for now and future jokesters. Young readers learn how to prepare a comedy routine and how to draw their own comic strips. They discover what separates a good clown from a stupendous one, and how to perform clown routines like juggling and pratfalls. Tasty recipes, hilariously inspired crafts, crazy jokes, fascinating facts, and giggle-inducing activities complement each chapter. Examples include whipping up a batch of Earthworms and Dirt Cups for dinner, creating slapstick sound effects with a pair of vinyl gloves, and livening up a party with a Very Silly Walk-a-Thon. Claudia Dávila’s whimsical full-color art adds to the fun.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8–Becker offers funny facts, an informative diagram showing what goes on in the body when you laugh, brief discussions of different types of humor (situation comedy, parody, farce, riddles, puns), a How Funny Are You? quiz, tips and timing for stand-up routines, body lingo, props, six improvisation games, clowning material, and more. For kids who want to learn how to juggle, tell jokes, or use sight-gag items, it's all here. Cartooning is explained as well. Adult help is mentioned where appropriate, such as when using wire cutters. Eight kid-friendly recipes have names that are sure to attract the attention of young chefs, such as Bear Claw Candies and Moose Droppings. Cheerful, animated illustrations add interest and energy to the pages. Catherine Perkins and Katie Roden's The Most Excellent Book of How to Be a Clown (Millbrook, 1996) is for a younger audience. A great collection of comic possibilities.–Augusta R. Malvagno, Queens Borough Public Library, NY
