5.0 out of 5 stars These are funny and fabulous
Fractions can be a really hard concept for some children, they were for my son. This book, that I used this summer between 6th and 7th grade was a great help to get him clearer on this subject.

I love this series that uses humor to teach. It capures their attention and teaches while they are laughing. The book starts out very basic... although probably a bit more...

I'm disappointed with this workbook. I bought it based on the reviews, and it's just another math workbook nothing special. I was hoping to purchase something my two daughters (a 6th grader and a 3rd grader) could pick up, read themselves, and be able to solve the problems on their own, giving them some confidence in solving fractional questions.

However,...

Fractions can be a really hard concept for some children, they were for my son. This book, that I used this summer between 6th and 7th grade was a great help to get him clearer on this subject.

I love this series that uses humor to teach. It capures their attention and teaches while they are laughing. The book starts out very basic... although probably a bit more advanced than he was in third grade. It starts with *picturing fractions* or as its called *martha crunch, personal fractions trainer*

some examples of contents are:

great artists of the world draw fractions (recognizing fractions)
Louis Lewis, Fractional Private eye ( equivalent fractions)
Texarkana Bernstein, the worlds greatest adventurer and her trusty dog, woovis, episode 1 (adding and subtraction mixed numbers with like denominators)
Arnold guck: man or myth (ratio)

While the message is clearly math, the time spent doing it alot of fun. So the secondary message is positive also...That math need not be a drudge, that anything can be fun... that learning isn't something to be dreaded.

The pictures are fun and can be colored. The pages copied if you have multiple children. The answers are in the back. The book is very readable. I like that they use a combination of several fonts and boldface types..even within the same page. I think it makes it easier for my son to read and separate concepts and areas. Pencils are better than pens or marker as the pages are a bit thin but this book is a clear winner in every sense of the word.

This is a workbook! I own 3 of Dan Greenberg workbooks and this is the best one. The students reads the story. There are 10 - 20 problems in the story that the student solves at the end of the story.

I'm a homeschool mom whose fifth grader was having great difficulty with word fraction problems. He loves this book! The questions are presented in fun easy-to-understand stories that make the subject of fractions a lot less intimidating. Thank you for making this book available! I highly recommend it!

However, the author skips steps so you don't see how the math problem is actually solved.

For example: page 44 on subtracting mixed numbers with unlike denominators, he goes from 10 4/6 to 9 10/6 with NO explanation of how he took a whole number, converted it to a fraction (ie 6/6) and added it to 4/6 making it 10/6. My kids just stared at me and asked how do you do that? What if the parent doesn't know themselves?

Another example, page 50 multiplying a fraction he tells the reader to "simplify if you can", and takes 3/5 X 5/6 to 1/1 X 1/2. Truthfully, I had to process it for a minute before I realized that this could only be done by cross simplification. Again, no mention of HOW to do it.

The answer section in the back also is lacking severely. It skips answers with no explanation why.

Overall, I'm very disappointed. The only thing the book is good for is giving ideas for presentation. Definitely not a teaching tool unless you already know how to solve the problems!

A fun fraction workbook. I have used it with my youngest and with my niece, (they both have their own copy, of course) with pretty positive results. Give it a try, and you will probably find it helpful.

This is a great book to teach fractions. It's so easy to follow. Lots of examples for kids to follow and little stories throughout to understand what each type of fraction means. Well worth it.
