5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific!...but with EXTREME reservations., December 16, 2010
By
M. Gariti (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Funny Games [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
In 1999, I turned 18. I decided that since I still couldn't drink, and I had already been smoking, that I'd stop by an adult video store. Inside the store, there was a poster saying: "Cannes Film Festival to stop in Pittsburgh this year!" This was the first time that Cannes Film Festival stopped by Pittsburgh, and I was old enough to go, too!

Once there, I paid $15 to get in, and to my dismay realized EACH MOVIE cost an additional $15+! (Which has changed more recently. There's still a cover, but MOST movies are free). Long story short, I could only afford two: Titanic (which also got widely released, it might've even made a profit), and Funny Games. Titanic was good, but Funny Games BLEW ME AWAY!

It was also clearly evident that it would never get released in theaters...not in its original form, anyway. It WAS in theaters, had an NC-17 rating, was HEAVILY cut, but with no scare and very muted violence.

"Why was it so violent, though? Was it really neccessary?" Um, YES! It was based on a true story, and it's sole purpose was to expose the depths of the darkness an overeducated mind can and actually DID reach.
