Editorial Reviews

Review

It is with awe that I observe families being able to cope so wonderfully well with what has to be one of the most difficult tasks a parent might face: raising a child with autism. <P>When they combine that expertise and grace with a sense of humor, then that is really special! Lisa Masters is doing just that. --Dr. Raun Melmed, Melmed Center

I respect this woman for focusing on her kids beyond everything else she had to endure ( I know what that is like) There are some funny stories in this book! I can relate to some of them but my only disapointment was that they contained nothing of the non-verbal children with autism (like my son). I would definatly recomend the book if for no other purpose than to teach people awareness !

"The Funny Side of Autism" is a very insightful read that helped me to understand the struggles and the triumphs of raising and interacting with autistic children. I have a very good friend with 2 autistic children and reading this book really opened my eyes. It helped me to appreciate the love and commitment of parents with autistic children and helped me to better understand how to successfully communicate and interact with my friend's amazing kids. Bravo to Lisa Masters for the wonderful work that she has done!

This book starts out sad, with the history leading up to the stories. It reminded me very much of my sister's situation, with two disabled children, one physically, one emotionally, and her divorce and starting life over.
Then came all the stories from families of unique children, and I love how easy it is to see how wonderfully special each of our children are- after the fact. The only thing I wish is that there was a larger compilation of these stories, and that the stories were more than just quick snippets. I'd have loved more of a slice of life style. But I can't hold that against the author, that's just what one reader wants.
I will say that the writing was very well done.

"The Funny side of Autism" by Lisa Master's is book that looks beyond the negative elements of Autism to highlight the positive aspects in the lives of others. It is a refreshing take on the disorder and should be read by special needs parents because of the instant relatability they will have to her writing style and the stories of the other families. It is a light hearted book as where most other books on Autism seem to come off very emotional and laboring. This book is a refreshing "half glass full" book on Autism that is an excellent read for parents and people who have been touched by a child with Autism in their lives.

The Funny Side of Autism is a wonderful book with a unique concept. So often, people focus only on what a child with Autism suffers from. This book shows what a child with Autism can contribute. The Funny Side shows just that. I love the perspective that this book shows and helps us to understand that while at times raising a child with autism can be hard, it also can be very rewarding. Thank you, Lisa Masters, for showing us what is so easy to forget.

The Funny Side Of Autism is a touching and candid look into the everyday lives of children with autism and it allows the reader a reprieve from the seriousness and heartbreak of autism in order to enjoy the happiness that these children bring to the lives of their families and caretakers each day. There were so many moments while reading this book that I laughed out loud, because many of these stories are nothing short of hilarious! This book is a fantastic choice for anyone looking for a heartwarming read!

This book was a long time coming and much needed. It gives us permission to laugh again, when we never thought we would. Humor and laughter is without a doubt the best medicine. My grandchildren are autistic and there isn't a day that goes by when they don't make me laugh. Thank you Lisa Masters for having the courage to write this book and showing us the funny side of autism.

Awesome book. My little brother has Autism and I bought it just to see how many similarities I could find between the kids the author writes about and my brother. Its really nice to be able to laugh about something that some many people see as a disability and bring "the funny side of Autism" to the surface
