Superb Pseudolus,
By robber666 (London/Berlin) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum (1963 Original London Cast) (Audio CD)
This recording is a real gem. Frankie Howard's timing is wonderous (and his singing is not bad either!). He plays the ananrchy of the slave desperate to be free better than any other. This show cemented Howard's stardom. Pseudolus became such a popular character and Howard so linked with it in the puublic's minds it led to the TV show and film spin off "Up Pompeii".
The young lovers are fresh, funny and vulnerable. John Rye is especially imaginative. Add to this Kenneth Conner of "Carry on" fame and pre Doctor Who Jon Pertwee and a great cast of old British Vaudevillians. The whole cd ripples with energy, personality and the ensemble pops through the speakers at you. Joyous! |
