My four year old loved this imaginative story, with the just the right amount of text for a preschooler (and likely K-2). The illustrations remind me of the Arnold Lobel and Maurice Sendak books I loved as a kid. A smattering of vocabulary words, like "vanquishing" pair well with plenty of sight words.

This is a beautifully illustrated and imaginative story that will delight children of any age (including those of us over 30). My 3 year-old daughter was engrossed from page one and wanted to read it again and again. Unlike many of her princess books, I didn't mind at all! It's a magical and funny story with giant ants, dinosaurs, and a few cameos from familiar characters like Little Red Riding Hood. An instant classic.

Would you believe the boy missed breakfast because giant ants stole it from him? Would you believe a huge—and I mean HUGE—ape mistook the school bus for a banana? Would you believe the boy meet a girl wearing a red coat and needing help finding her grandmother’s house in the woods? No?
The illustrations are great. The title page shows the first book lying on the floor, open as if the boy had been reading it the night before. The clock shows he is late, as does the look on his dog’s face. There are so many little details on each page it could take you a long time to finish this quick read. If you have read Farewell Floppy, The Bear’s Song or Bear’s Sea Adventure, you will instantly recognize Chaud’s distinctive style. This is a follow-up to “I Didn’t Do My Homework Because…” , and it didn’t disappoint! Kids will love this book! As someone who is almost always just in time to school, this book is a necessity for me! Mr. Cali and Mr. Chaud are a wonderful team who work very well together. The book is funny, and outrageous, and totally unbelievable…or is it? You’ll never know… Mr. Chaud did a great job illustrating. He has a realistic, yet whimsical approach to his art. I find it funny (and cool) how the ninjas’ legs can bend backwards. Cali’s zany story captures the mind of a kid perfectly. This is a great book! *NOTE* I got a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

We just received this book as a gift. And it is great! My 7-year old son can read the entire book at his 1st grade level (he is about average in reading). It takes about 10-15 minutes and each page (about 16 pages two-sided) has one or two lines of sentences which keeps him engaged. The story is quite adventurous and just the right amount of detail for his level. He loved it! Plus it's a nice smaller, light size book that is great for travel. Great writing. I'll be looking for more books similar to this one.
