Product Description

Editorial Review

Furby has been resurrected from relative hibernation to join the throng of electronic pets on the toy market—and, truthfully, he’s one of the cuter ones out there. With his round, furry body; pointy, wiggling ears; and cute little Munchkin voice, Furby is much more endearing than some of the competing hard plastic robotic animals. He’s also a lot more sophisticated than previous models as Furby is now powered by a technology Hasbro calls emoto-tronics. This technology enables the little guy to show his moods, from happy to sleepy to surprised to sad, through facial expressions and through the tone of his voice. Furby arrives speaking his native tongue of Furbish, which sounds like a bunch of gibberish to the untrained ear. With his owners’ guidance, however, Furby learns a form of English that sounds like a cross between Gremlin chattering noises and Yoda’s backwards sentences. The more kids play with Furby, the more advanced his actions and vocabulary become; eventually, he can tell a joke or story or play a game. Furby runs on four "AA" batteries (not included). --Cristina Vaamonde

4.0 out of 5 stars Furby is back and speaking more than Furbish!, August 4, 2005
By

This review is from: Furbie Grey With Pink Belly (Toy)
We all remember the original Furby craze - little electronic "friends" that spoke in Furbish. Well, they are back but with some new features and the ability to speak English eventually. Right out of the box the little guy will speak mostly in a Furbish/English mix. Fortunatley it understands spoken English so you can ask it to do things like tell a joke, sing a song, or tell a story. This Furby has great facial expressions which give the owner a clue as to what it is "feeling". Gone is the light sensor of the old Furby (not sure what that was used for anyway). He's a bit larger than the original, but also much more animal-like in it's behavior. More natural. If you hold it close you will believe the toy is watching you.
The more you interact with the toy, the more English words it speaks. A great new feature is the ability to tell Furby to go to sleep. And you can now turn it off with a power switch located between it's feet.
The toy is sturdy and the battery life seems to be pretty good. Expect children about 7 on up (depending on child), will love Furby. Also gadget and robot enthusiasts will be fascinted.

4.0 out of 5 stars New Furby. Improved?, December 28, 2005

This review is from: Furbie Grey With Pink Belly (Toy)
I purchased two Furbys (Furbies?) this holiday season. One each for my 5yr old nephew and 3yr old niece. Both are familiar with the original Furby, so they knew right away how to use the new models. Even ditching the spoon in favor of feeding via jamming a finger in Furby's mouth.
First off, the toy seems durable enough. I couldn't believe the manhandling I had to give each one just to replace the batteries. I thought for sure I'd snap the ears off trying to both push down the spring loaded battery cover while getting it screwed shut.

Next, one of the toys worked great right out of the box. The other seemed like it had a screw loose somewhere. It would interact somewhat, but no matter what it did, it would finish by saying something in "furbish" (that I never looked up) and then start dancing until you made it stop by pressing the tummy button.

I finally just reset* both of them and both are now working perfectly.

I'm only giving 4 stars because, for all the new technology that supposedly went into this new Furby, I'm surprised at how limited it is. Only a handful of commands to give it, I've only heard it tell two jokes and it only seems to play one game. I expected MUCH more.

But, the kids don't seem to mind and us adults like the 'off' button.

*(Turn Furby off and turn upside down. Press and hold the mouth button and switch to 'on'. Let go of the mouth button and Furby should say "Good morning". The Furby is now reset and has "forgotten" most of it's English.)

3.0 out of 5 stars Limited, but grows on you!, December 28, 2005

Compared to the old Furby and Shelby, this toy is very limited. Sings only one song, tells only one story, plays only one game. Bigger and more cuddly than the old models, it seems to be geared for the very young child only. The humor of the old ones entertained the adults, too, but this one does very little in that regard. I hope I can find the "Easter Eggs" (hidden tricks) in this one as I did in the old models.

I must say, though, that after a couple weeks I became fond of this guy and appreciate him more now. And he definitely makes a better choice for kids than the older models because he is not rude at all.
