We love this CD especially Willie McBride and When you were 16. Almost too much to listen to. Brings tears to our eyes.

This incredible album is one I have always loved. I have played it 100s of times in Ireland and here at home. In the Green Fields of France, their voices evoke deep feelings about the waste, uselessness and sadness of war. The words, melody and voices combine in a way that gives me pause as I watch life pass, by recalling that the ultimate sacrifice for country occurs in a split second---and persists in the pain of those who loved the lost ones for tens of years afterwards. The other tracks are equally moving.

If you're not familiar with the Furey Brothers then you can't go wrong buying this or any other cd by them. I connected with this group when I heard them live several years ago and have held the view ever since that they are the heart and soul of Ireland, the best of all traditional Irish groups. Finbar's baritone and George and Eddie's tenor voices are a perfect balance. Unfortunately, Paul passed away three or four years ago and the Fureys seem to have effectively stopped recording (except for Finbar's sdolo CD--wonderful, too), but their discography includes a number of quality CD's (Amazon should offer at least a dozen more). More than other Irish group they capture the best of Irish music and brillantly tread that fine line between beauty and sentimentality. "From Clare to Here" (the Ralph McTell song) and "The Lonesome Boatman" are worth the price of the CD itself. Don't settle for the sterile classicism of the Chieftans or the silliness of the Dubliners--buy the real thing.
