As the industry standard in power conditioners, this unit lives up to its name. Other reviewers have commented negatively on slide out housing for the lights, but I have had no issue. Mine slide nicely, and seem to be pretty solid. That being said, I decided to give it 4 stars instead of 5 for a couple reasons:

1. Unit uses dim incandescent bulbs rather than LED lights which are much brighter and last longer.

2. The short depth of the unit basically negates the use of the rack space directly below the power conditioner when wall warts are in use. Or conversely, wall warts cannot be used if conditioner is mounted on the lowest rack.

All in all, very happy with functionality despite the couple minor "cons" I mentioned.

As with my review of another Furman power conditioner, these sub $100 conditioners don't actually do "power conditioning" as in AVR (automatic voltage regulation). If your AC power is say, 95v or 140v AC, it's going to feed your equipment 95v or 140v AC respectively; these's no boost / limiter / conditioning to bring it to 120v AC. It will, however, protect you from surges / spikes and filters EMI/RFI. Consider this to be a rack mountable version of the Furman SS-6B Steel Power Conditioner along with the added fadable lights. As some reviews have stated, the lights on this have far to be desired, but they do get the job done (lights are incandescent).

Pros
1. Filters out EMI/RFI well
2. Price (considering it does have lights)
3. Fader for lights
4. Spacing for wall-warts

Cons
1. Lights aren't pro-quality IMO, but they do work OK. Lights ARE a bit dim if you're in a fairly bright room, so I can see where some people might find these to not be quite bright enough, although they work fine for my setup.

This thing does it's job. The reason I've knocked it 1 star is due to 2 issues I have. First is that the power cable is too short for my liking, and the fact that it's hard-wired to the unit is a bit inconvenient. I realize that the power cable's gauge is large and they would be worried about someone using a cheap power cable that couldn't keep up with the amperage needed, but I still would like the ability to have a modular power cable.

The other reason which is easily passed over are the lights. They work well enough, and you're able to see your equipment in the dark with them, but they use such small dim bulbs that it needs to be pretty dark for them to be useful at all. Also, the cannisters that house the bulbs aren't very smooth pulling out or pushing in. I would say these are easily looked over, however it is the only difference between the M-8x and this model. As such, I felt they should be addressed.

I own a few of these and that work great for what they are, rack mountable surge protectors. Furman's usage of "Power Conditioner" is a little grand for what you actually get. Just pop the lid and see whats really inside. Not much. That said, it's quite cheap, the lights are handy, and switch/outlet layout was perfect for my uses. You will only get true power conditioning with an online UPS. A UPS can be expensive depending on your load and you'll need to replace the battery pack every 5 years or so.

Nice unit, does what it is supposed to do. The light control knob and light tubes feel a little cheap and flimsy, but what can you expect at this price point. Using it to condition a portable sound and video system at our church, and I have no complaints about its function.

If you believe that power conditioning does anything, go buy a Monster one. Bought the M-8L version, which is the same thing except older, opened it up, and it was disappointing. Nothing but three MOV's (surge suppressents) and one lonely 0.1uF capacitor, which all of your devices already have. Light slides are jittery and seem prone to break. Solidly made other than that, all metal, even the lights. This is just an easy way to turn all your studio or home theater gear off and on. That's it.

The Furman AC stuff is the only way to go! Don't skimp on the cheeper brands as your pro AV gear deserves this grade of protection. The Furman build quality is simply tops! Highly Recommended!

just perfect. No problems. I really like the front outlet as a spare because I'm always using up the rear.
