FURminator Nail Grinder

A well groomed pet is a happy, healthy pet. But, there are many reasons that frequent visits to your pet stylist aren’t always possible. With FURminator’s line of professional quality grooming tools, you can achieve professional results in your own home. As industry innovators and experts on pet hair, FURminator understands the entire shedding cycle and the role that hair care and hygiene play in helping to reduce shedding and make you and your pet happy. For that reason, FURminator developed a high-performance line of hair-care, nail, hygiene, and waterless products.

Nail care is one of the most important and somewhat misunderstood areas of pet care for most pet owners. Because nails require clipping and grinding, many pet parents are afraid of injuring their pets, but ignoring nail care is just as harmful. FURminator's nail care solutions are completely safe and easy to use, thus eliminating the discomfort from the process, not only for pets but also for their owners.

Benefits of using the FURminator Nail Grinder:

  • Tool design ensures nail trimming is safe, efficient and painless
  • Ideal for all dog breeds
  • Regular nail trimming (recommended every 3-4 weeks) promotes comfort and health
  • Eliminates sore paws, legs and hips
  • Two-speed cordless grinder includes two replaceable grinding bands and operates for 100+ hours on 4 AA-alkaline batteries (included)
  • Automatic LED light ensures safety and maximizes control
  • Anti-microbial plastic helps keep germs and bacteria at a minimum

Instructions for Use

  1. Monitor your pet’s nails and care for when appropriate to avoid overgrowth.
  2. Pet’s nails should not touch the floor when standing. Regular maintenance is important for the health and comfort of your pet.
  3. Slowly introduce the grinder to your pet. When they are comfortable with the tool and the sound, you should begin working on the nails.
  4. Before starting, note where the dead nail ends and where the live part – the quick- starts. Hold the paw firmly while gently pressing the base of each nail with your thumb.
  5. Gently grind down the nail going slowly to keep your pet comfortable. Be sure to stop grinding before reaching the quick to avoid bleeding. Short passes of the grinder are recommended to avoid over-heating of the nail, which could cause discomfort.

Much better than the stress of using nail clippers.

The guard ensures I won't grind past the quick of her nails and the light is also very helpful.

The problem: the sanding band slid out of place with only the pressure from my dog's nails.

Decent product. It does take a decent while to trim the nails if they are pretty long to begin with, and if you have a larger breed with thicker nails. I would like to compare it to a dremel, but I havent gotten the chance. I like the plastic guard. I can see it being especially helpful if you have a long hair dog, as hair won't wrap around. The light is also really helpful to be able to see where the quick is while you are grinding.

It is rather loud, which scares a lot of dogs, but here is my experience with this:

I got this for my rather spooky greyhound. The first time I turned it on several feet away from him, he PANICKED. Ran into the crate, tried to hide. Getting anywhere near him led to crying. I thought I had just wasted my money and was rather dismayed at first. If you're in this situation, here's what to do:

(I clicker train, but you don't need to for this)
1. At all meal times, I turned the grinder on and set it down just far away enough from his bowl, that he was aware of it, but would still come eat. By the 4th meal (dinner on day 2), it was standing directly next to his bowl and he was eating just fine.
2. A few times a day, for about 3 or so minutes, I would get treats, and take the grinder and turn it on for just long enough that he doesn't panic, then click-treat. As I was doing this, I would increase the length that the grinder was turned on and decrease the distance away from him, making sure to treat just before he panics.
3. Mine wasn't a fan of getting his paws handled in general, so a few times a day, I would get him sitting, and touch his paw, click, treat. He went from pulling back immediately and crying, to, by the end of the second session of this, laying there calmly and letting me hold and handle his front paws.

I got two puppies, Morkie and Maltese. One of my two puppies were scared of the noise the grinder makes. But after I let it on for a while, she got used to it. It didn't take so long. FURminator grinder works so well. It's not too loud and it trims nails SUPER fast. No need of the nail trimmer!! LOVE IT

My shar pei/blue nose pit mix is a bit squeamish about people touching her paws. I tried to clip them using doggy nail trimming scissors from the time she was 10 weeks old, but now she flinches so much I'm really worried about injuring her. I took her to Petsmart to get her nails ground down and she struggled with the technician but eventually her nails were perfect. I bought the FURminator Nail Grinder last week and it works very well! The guard ensures I won't grind past the quick of her nails and the light is also very helpful. I have to sit with her between my legs (head facing out) and she really relaxes for me to work on her nails if my boyfriend stabilizes her hind legs by holding on to her back paws. I was worried I would have to acclimate her to the sound over a period of time but she has no problem with the noise because it is not very loud.

I LOVE this GRINDER! - It is much quieter than the normal dremmel (so it doesn't scare the dogs nearly as much) - Easy to Hold. It has a LIGHT BULB on it, so you can see the nail better!...... Comes in handy, when you are working in a tight spot.... My only complain, is that I wish it had a plug in attachment, just in case the battery dies when you are halfway through a groom... But I will forgive them, since I love it so much. Very powerful. Two speed... Recommended.

I've had several grinders over the years, several dremmels (corded, mini cordless, etc) and a few other brands. I use a large cordless Dremmel at home, but those are expensive, heavy and loud (and it is hard to find the after-market guards anymore). I also dislike that the cordless dremmel has a proprietary battery pack so if it doesn't have much of a charge when I'm ready to do nails, I have to find the charging base and wait for the battery to charge. I got the Furminator to try using with the dogs at work who are unfamiliar with nail grinders. It isn't as big or as loud (or as high-pitched) as my regular cordless dremmel, and although the Furminator only has two speeds, it seems to be adequately powered for the job at ... paw. It uses 4 AA batteries so I can just swap out my own rechargables and keep it ready at all times. I read about others having issues with the band slipping and I agree that the bands don't fit as tightly as they do on a dremmel, but the dremmel ones are a PAIN to get off so that might not be all bad. I experimented with the Furminator and while the band will slip down about 1/8 of an inch, it doesn't slip off, so I don't think it will be an issue. The clear cover is very nice and the light is handy as well. The only real issue I had is that the instructions on the package weren't helpful or complete. I searched all over the web (including the maker's web page) and found nothing. I finally happened upon a PDF of the European instructions (they may come with the 6-pk of replacement bands too) here: http://www2.tetra.de/tet_internet_import/import_data/Instruction_Manual_FURminator_Refill_Pack_Nail_Grinder.pdf
That will tell you that the clear guard just lifts off, a fact which is not at all obvious when you look at it.
