We are very pleased with this chess set. It is very detailed, and well worth the money. We were kind of leary at first, but when it arrived, we were very impressed. Picture did not do this set justice. We keep this set displayed in our living room. Anything that we have ordered from Amazon has been well worth our money.

The board itself is really heavy. All the pieces are very detailed and are a nice weight--they do not look or feel "cheap". The sides of the board have castle mosaics "carved" into it and the gilt dragons, like the pieces, are extremely detailed and quite lovely. The actual playing board that goes on top is gold and silver with "cracking" to make it look aged/antique. This was well worth the money!

I gave this to my 16-year old nephew and he was thrilled with it. The entire family marveled at the detail and how rich and classy this board is.

I purchased this chess set for my husband and was not disappointed. The only negative comment about the board is it is extremely heavy due to the dragon heads at each corner. This is not a problem for me but should be considered when purchasing as a gift. It is beautiful and the pieces are, indeed, carved to look like medieval knights, Kings, Queens, etc. One 'side' has pieces made to look bronzy and one 'side' has pieces made to look like pewter.

The downside of the purchase is the pieces are made of something resembling plastic so break very easliy. My husband is disabled and soon after I purchased the chess set, he tripped over the leg of the table it was sitting on. The entire board and all the pieces flew into the air and landed on the carpet. Probably 80% of the pieces broke. This was very disappointing. I did not expect them to break that easily and now have to find new pieces so we can play again.

I would recommend this board as long as the purchaser considers the weight of the board and breakability of the pieces.

My 12 year old son and I were in a shop at the Excalibur in Las Vegas when he spotted a medieval chess set very similar to this one priced at $265. I nearly bought it because we were very impressed with the unique detailing; however I was not confident in transporting it back home from vacation. After returning I began my search for the same set and came across this item, and after reading the reviews decided to make the purchase. I could not be happier with this set! The pieces are wonderfully intricate and the board itself is quite substantial and heavy. I would encourage anyone looking for a medieval themed set to order this. The price is fantastic for the quality. Although we have played with this set several times, I would not suggest use by small children as the pieces are more on the fragile/delicate side and would probably not sustain a fall or rough handling. I also purchased a marble and onyx set from Amazon to display in my living room which was also an excellent purchase-giving it the same 5 star rating

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised with this purchase - The shipping weight was 17 pounds - its a heavy well made item -its very attractive - you absolutely wont go wrong with this - Its beautifully made - The figures are a good weight - and good size - The board also good weight and its big - I was rather shocked when I recieved it - Very good experiance - and seller shipped this out to me soooo fast! I have to rate this purchase as one of my best from Amazon! Dont be hesitant about buying this!

This is actually a very well made chess set! I was surprised. The details are great and the "feel" of each piece is wonderful. This entire set makes a wonderful conversation piece and is worth every penny. It of course never replace the Staunton, but it is sometimes nice to play with a theme set such as this.

Each piece of this set is quite detailed and has a very antique look to it. This is a heavy set and actually looks quite good as a decorative item as well as being somewhat functional. I liked it...still do. If you like chess and/or are into this particular era, i.e. medieval, then I can hardly see how you can go wrong with this item.

My six year old grandson has taken to chess in a big way so I spent considerable time looking for a good, inexpensive set, reading the reviews, etc. I chose the Medieval Chess Set based on several good reviews and when it arrived, (within a few days), I had the same impression as some other writers: what a beautiful, heavy, nicely detailed set. This is definitely a bargain for around $40. I liked it so much I kept it and got the kid the Xian Warrior Chinese set which is also a good bargain and though heavy, comes in a box that can be transported. The Medieval set is large and rich looking and we have it on display on a chest in the living room. Both items were purchased through Amazon and both arrived in perfect condition and much quicker than expected.

The set is beautiful. Despite the weight of the base due to the dragon heads, I have NO complaints!
