Book Description

May 2002
John Lloyd is a highly respected furniture restorer and maker, with a loyal following among the readers of Furniture & Cabinetmaking magazine. In this compilation of his thoroughly informative articles, he entertainingly describes the diverse and challenging projects he encounters in his workshop and talks the reader through the restoration process. His knowledge and enthusiasm shine through, whether describing the repair of cockbeading on drawer fronts, taking the kinks out of a card table, or restoring a table attacked by a tomcat. * Repairing a laminated splat on a Chippendale-style carver * * Restoring a rosewood writing table * Making ingenious cramping devices * * Copying period chairs * Repairing a longcase clock * Restoring a 'dial' barometer * * Restoring a chest of drawers * Re-creating cabriole legs for a chest on a stand *

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

When it comes to antique furniture, few things are worse than a poorly executed restoration. Much like a medical doctor, a furniture restorer should swear to do no harm. In a collection of articles originally published in Furniture & Cabinetmaking magazine, British furniture restorer Lloyd shows how to fix a variety of furnishings properly. Using an engaging writing style and plenty of color photos, Lloyd shows how he fixed a number of higher-end furnishings; splintered chairs, missing pieces and parts, hideous repairs in need of correction, a table attacked by a cat, and plain wear and tear are all covered. More a survey than a step-by-step guide, this work assumes that the reader has some woodworking knowledge and should be of value to anyone with an in-depth interest in furniture restoration. Appropriate for comprehensive collections.
