Editorial Reviews

Review

A pure visual treat...as a study of one of this nation’s great furniture innovators...you’ll want to share it with your woodworking friends. (Jim Harrold - Wood Magazine )

An authoritative study... as good a point of entry…as any book ever written on the subject of modern furniture. (Chipstone Foundation, American Furniture )

Peppered with interesting revelations that arise from close examination of the Maloof oeuvre...academic rigor balanced with a writing style that is well crafted with the integration of contextual material...a source of much new information on Maloof and an opportunity to see his work in the wider context of the changing American crafts scene (Clive Edwards, University of Loughborough - Journal of Design History )

5.0 out of 5 stars Work of a genius, October 23, 2001

This review is from: The Furniture of Sam Maloof (Hardcover)
When I started woodworking as a hobby about 11 years ago one of the books I first came across in a library was "Sam Maloof". I consider Sam Maloof to be a genius. When I heard that there is a new book out about Sam Maloof I couldn't wait to get a hold of it. The book "The Furniture of Sam Maloof" is a very nice and detailed life story of the woodworking genius and (my guru) with a lot of details about his excellant work. This book is so precious to me that I wont even let anybody in my family put a fingerprint on it. I could easily say that no other person has made such a profound impression on me than Sam Maloof. This book is a must for every woodworker's library.

Bought this book for my dad for Christmas and he loved it. It is a very nice book for inspiring any wood worker. If you know someone who loves wood working and you are tired of buying them another tool, give this book a try.

This review is from: The Furniture of Sam Maloof (Hardcover)
This book is a detailed biography of Sam Maloof. It has many detailed pictures of Mr. Maloof's work. Of course there are many photos of his famous rockers, but there are also photos of his tables, baby rockers/cradles and early furniture. The book is easy to read. The sentences are not verbose nor are they staccato.

But, the author seems to catalog every single show, large or small, that Mr. Maloof's work was exhibited in. (Apparently Mr. Maloof's wife, Freda, collected volumes of memorabilia about her husband' career.) Being a woodworker, I was also very intersted in technical details, but this book is somewhat lacking.

If I could give this book 4 1/2 stars, I would. It's not quite a five out of five. But it's more than a four star effort.
