Lundell (My Book of Funny Valentines) has apparently reasoned that if curling up with a book is fun, curling up with a book covered in plush must be even better; handling this volume offers the tactile appeal of cuddling a stuffed animal. Between the furry covers, a mother bear reassures her little bear, fearful that the wind will carry him off, that she will keep him safe: if necessary, she says, "I'll find a plane/ and fly with all my might and main,/ and when you're near the planet Mars/ I'll catch you in a net of stars." The story is comforting, even if highly familiar; perhaps its most well-known model is Margaret Wise Brown's The Runaway Bunny. McPhail's (If You Were My Bunny) lovely illustrations don't need a fur setting to boost their charms. The pictures of the wind whisking a stocking-capped little bear through the deep indigo of the night sky are especially winning, and his lit-up Paris sparkling beneath the dancing airborne bears has a magic that soars over the sometimes pat rhymes. Ages up to 6.

This is a beautifully illustrated book with a soft, furry cover. It is a comforting bedtime story ideal for reading aloud. We keep extras on hand as baby gifts, and my kids (ages 4 and 9) still count it as a favorite. A little bear is worried at bedtime and his mother reassures him he has nothing to fear. She will help him whatever the situation. The illustrations are among the best I've seen.

My son is now 16, but when he was just a little guy, this was one of his most prized books. It is a story of a mother's unconditional love for her bear cub. However fearful he appears to be, Mother Bear is there to reassure him that she will always be there to love and protect him. The book is told in rhyme, which also lends to the cadence of little ears.The first time that I read it to my son, I cried. As a person in education, and as a mother, this is one of my all time favorite children's books. It is an absolute joy and should be viewed as part of a child's book collection if you are a parent. I am buying it today for my cousin, who is due with her own baby in January.

The rhythm and rhyme of this story entranced my son. It was the only book that he showed an interest in from one to four months old. He loved the contrasts of night sky and the white wind in the illustrations and was captivated by the inflection you can read this story with. The fur cover really caught his attention later and provided additional textile enjoyment. Now that he is one it is still his favorite book to pull off the shelf for me to read.
