JANE SEABROOK is a designer and illustrator who, in recent years, has focused on paintings of wildlife. She lives in Auckland, New Zealand, with her husband, two teenage children, and four cats--three adorable seal-point Birmans named Fizz, Bean, and Maisie, and one elderly British blue named Philby.

Jane Seabrook is an independent illustrator and designer who lives in Auckland, New Zealand. In recent years, her artwork has centered on carefully observing and painting wildlife. Jane's previous books include Furry Logic and Furry Logic Parenthood, both of which reflect her considerable artistic abilities and rich sense of humor. The author shares her life with a number of animals, her husband, and two teenage children.

I saw this book at a school library conference and bought several copies to give as gifts. The animals have perfect facial expressions and body language to represent what we go through and feel everyday. I bought the book for anniversary presents, but it also suits certain people I know. It is perfect for relationships, for example, it says, "Never go to bed mad- stay up and fight."

New Zealand artist Jane Seabrook has succeeded in creating one of the most charming and amusing gift books ever! Using captivating watercolor animal portraits to illustrate aphorisms, many of them with new twists, she puts life into perspective on many levels--and does so with panache. A precariously balanced coqui frog says, "I try to take one day at a time...but sometimes several days attack me at once." A baby alligator emerging from its egg states, "I didn't claw my way to the top of the food chain to eat roughage!" A hyperactive chipmunk announces, "It's been lovely. But I have to s c r e a m now."

Seabrook's art techniques allow her to pull off a book which in the hands of a lesser, less painstaking artist might be just "cute." Her paintings are rich and meticulously detailed--beautifully drawn with a sable brush of a single hair. Piling up many layers of watercolor, she builds her drawings and achieves depth, yet somehow still manages to convey a sense of spontaneity. The eyes of each animal "character" sparkle with what appears to be secret understanding of the message. Whimsical and full of surprises, this is the perfect gift book, even (or maybe, especially) for curmudgeons. Mary Whipple

What exquisite illustrations, what reassuring words. A precious little jewel of a book to be salivated over anywhere - the bathroom, the car, a mountaintop, to remind one that life is precious and to live it to the full. (it tells you how to do it too!)
