Budding journalists should enjoy this clever, irresistible introduction to the many particulars of newspaper writing and production. In a plot and format similar to Leedy's The Bunny Play , readers follow a group of vibrantly drawn, enterprising animals who, deciding that the city paper doesn't adequately cover their neighborhood, decide to produce a local tabloid. A surprisingly large amount of information is conveyed in this perky picture book: publishing, production, news gathering and editing, feature writing, circulation, even advertising. Of particular value is the final double-page spread, which concisely reviews the how-tos of "making your own newspaper for your family, neighborhood or school." Leedy also includes a clear, helpful glossary of 21 newspaper terms, from "article" to "type." Ages 5 -8.

Grade 2-4-- Leedy has assembled a crew of her zany animal characters to explain how a newspaper is published and to inspire children to try one. Her stylized critters with their squiggly black outlines and watercolor washes resemble real animals, except for news editor Rabbit, whose bulbous green eyes and curly lashes give her an otherworldly charm. All have humorous human touches as they go about their journalistic duties or play the roles of the public being served. The simplified surroundings focus attention on the action that fills the pages. The many angular frames include a myriad of activities and dialogue balloons, while the text outside the frames explains what is happening in the lively and appealing story. Readers watch as reporters gather facts, Rabbit writes an editorial, and the features editor assigns reporters to cover the arts, sports, foods, and personalities. Business must be served, so advertisements are solicited. Finally, all articles and advertisements must be in by the deadline so that the paper can be printed and distributed. The final pages include a list of steps to follow when making a newspaper, with a glossary of newpaper terms. Even no-nonsense, facts-only kids who lack the patience to read all the dialogue balloons will find information about making a successful paper, while others will enjoy watching the production of The Furry News whether they make their own or not. --Sylvia S. More About the Author

I've been writing and illustrating picture books for children for over twenty-five years. Though I majored in art in college, at the time I wasn't sure what kind of artist to be. Fortunately, it turned out that combining words and art to create picture books was a perfect career for me. Most of my books center around a particular topic such as fractions, the solar system, writing, and so on. The characters and story lines help put the subject matter into a meaningful context for young readers.

After growing up mostly in Delaware, I moved to central Florida a couple of decades ago, and currently live with my husband Andy on a three acre property with hawks, herons, and horses (the horses live next door.) We love the rustle of the pines in the breeze, the screeching of sandhill cranes flying overhead, and the chattering of many small birds that come and go as they please.

There's nothing like sitting down with a good book - or a good newspaper. This book gives young kids the advantages of both. In simple language and with wonderful illustrations and characters, it explains the role of a newspaper and also the roles of those who work there. The wonderful cast of animals, whose interests aren't being addressed by the local media, decide to start a paper of their own. They track down stories, write opinions, review the arts, sell ads and papers and type, edit, paste up, print and deliver. The subtle humor won't be missed on adults.

As book featured on Reading Rainbow, it is the perfect source for our homeschool group to establish their own newspaper. Witty, fun, innovative and very easy to understand. Great Book!

This book reads somewhat like a comic book. It teaches children the behind the scenes look at the making of a newspaper.

This book made my son want to make his own newspaper with his Dad!

The pictures in the book are also very cute!
