1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
My son has read most of these books and we thought it would be nice to have them on cd to listen to on the road. We bought the first one and liked it pretty well but when we got the second one we were not happy about the language or some of the characters. Some may like it but we don't.

This series provides young readers with a simple, yet appropriately challenging vocabulary. It also provides fine entertainment as it can hold a young man, who favors outdoor activities and sports, and his attention span for countless hours. A most highly reccomended series of books designed to encourage and develop young readers.

This is my all time favorite Hank the Cowdog book! I love Madam Moonshine and Wallace and Junior. It's witty and humorous throughout the book. I'm impatiently waiting for #34 to come out. I recomend any of these books to children and adult alike.

Poor Hank! This makes a great sequel to number one! This is one of the best, and the cure for this terrible disease is hilarious! I would recommend this book to any Hank the Cowdog fan! - MG

5.0 out of 5 stars THE SAGA AND TRIALS OF HANK CONTINUE., November 5, 2011
If you have a reluctant reader on your hands you might want to give this book and indeed, this series a try. If you are an adult who loves good humor, word play, and a nicely written tall tale, then you might want to give this book and this series a try.

John R. Erickson is has written over fifty of these Hank books...so far. Each and every one of them is an absolute delight. They are written in the mode of the "tall tale teller," and are written in first person using Hank the Cattle dog as the teller of the story. You get to see a working ranch, all the animals and people on the ranch and the wilderness around it with all the varied critters living there through the eyes of Hank.

Hank is the head of security and takes his job very serious. Our "security dog" goes from one misadventure to another and always has a unique way of sort of turning the circumstances of his mess to his advantage when he is telling us about his problems. He, i.e. Hank, sort of reminds me of a lot of humans I know.

In this second book of the series, Hank has an argument with the ranch cat over a fried egg. Through no fault of his own, Hank knocks himself sort of cross eyed, "Eye-Crosserosis," according to Hank, while trying to lunge through the fence to chastise the cat for eating his egg. And so his adventure begins.

In this tale we have some of our old favorites; the father and son buzzard team, the sort of crazy coyotes and are introduced to a very wise Madame Moonshine; a healer of sorts, who helps Hank out of his predicament. Hank also does battle with the neighbors new Doberman who is trying to step in on his girlfriend.

These have been and continue to be some of the most checked out books in our local public and school libraries; even after all these years. These books are falling apart they are used so much. Adult readers need to read closely as the author is very fast with a pun and his wordplay is an absolute delight. You do not have to be "country," which I am, to enjoy these tall tales.

These books are great family fun. I caught myself laughing out loud at just about every turn of the page with this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Adventures of Hank the Cowdog, December 9, 2003
By A Customer
Hank the cowdog is about a dog named Hank and he lives in a farm.Everything is going right fo Hank because he is the leader of the dogs and nobody ever dared to talk back to him until one day another dog named Rufus came to take over. Then Rufus starts making fun of Hank for having crossed eyes (he got crossed eyes because he tried to see the part where his nose had no skin on it).One time Rufus was acting like Hank (imitating Hank)and Hank ran away.Hank confronted (met) snakes and big birds which he had trouble with.Hank had to deal with Rufus.Do you think he (Hank) might get away with still being the leader?,well if you keep on reading the ending you will know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice change from the usual chapter books, December 16, 2011
By
Pop Bop (Denver, Colorado United States) - See all my reviews
An engaging main character, good supporting cast, nice ranch scenes, cowboy adventure - this is a nice change from the princess/moody child/school drama/fart and underpants chapter books that dominate the shelves at your local book store. They're a little corny, and after a while the different volumes begin to blend together, but these books might be just the ticket for your reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars Hank rocks!, August 8, 2011
John M. Erickson, Hank the Cowdog, vol. 2: The Further Adventures of Hank the Cowdog (Puffin Books, 1983)

Hank's second adventure (of... I no longer know, but it's a number larger than "many") starts out with Hank, after a tussle with something he shouldn't have tussled with, developing a nasty case of crossed-eyetis and needing to go find himself a solution before he gets offed by anything from his girl's new boyfriend, a nasty pinscher, to the local barn cat. Very simple language, straightforward plot, lots of action, and an engaging narrative voice should make this one a winner with reluctant readers and bibliovores alike. *** ½

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Very Funny and Enjoyable Books, November 28, 2010
We are reading the second book....the only problem I have with these books are that they are so funny! I have a hard time reading them because we are all giggling so hard. Really...they are that funny. It is a great bonding experience with the kids. It's nice to share a good belly laugh with the kids. I highly recommend them.
