This review is from: The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Stalwart Companions (Paperback)
The book starts out as though it were an attempt to prove Sherlock Holmes were a real person. Once past that introduction the story continues in a fair rendition of a copy of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, particularly as to the deductions Holmes persues to solving his cases. The time is 1880 and the deductions are appropriate to that time frame as apparently are the mindset of the characters, again utilizing the time to show the attitude towards the major and minor criminals of the time as well as the attitude towards the poorer levels of some of the people in New York City and the attitude towards the politicans of the time. Since Theodore Roosevelt is one of the characters a fair chatacterization may be expected.

I liked the way to 2 characters get together: all the backround setting for the novel and its geography seem especially well done, and the mystery turns out to be more layered than I thought.

I must admit I am rather tired of authors trying to prove that Sherlock Holmes existed. So I was rather disappointed that the opening chapter of this novel tried to convince me that Holmes was a real person. But once you look past that, this book is actually rather good. Theodore Roosevelt narrates the story. He meets up with Sherlock Holmes and together they work together to solve a most strange murder. I thought this book was very good. The story takes place in America, and Holmes is very young and solving mysteries sans Watson. I almost enjoyed the fact that this book was also a bit of a historical fiction. (SPOILER WARNING) The culprit is actually the assassin of President James A. Garfield. (END OF SPOILERS) Overall, The Stalwart Companions is a good Holmes novel which will excit the fans of Holmes and conspiracy.
