This is one of the best fantasy series, the story is lively and entertaining, the characters are colorful and interesting, and the plot is energetic and spellbinding! The action scenes are much better than what you find in Robert Jordan "Wheel of Time" series, and much more manageable in scope.

5.0 out of 5 stars A superb theater-of-the-mind experience., April 5, 2000
This review is from: The Further Chronicles of Conan (Audio Cassette)
Conan of Cimmeria was the character originally created by Robert E. Howard and launched the fantasy genre known as "sword & sorcery". So popular was the character that after Howard's untimely death, others were sought to write more Conan action/adventure fantasy tales, first based on unfinished stories and story ideas that formed a part of the Howard's literary legacy. Then select authors began to be granted permission by the executors of the Howard estate to create more Conan stories, some of which found their way into such diverse media as comics, graphic novels, movies, and even television. This magnificently narrated tale holds all the classic elements of the genre: sorcerers and demons, warriors and smugglers, the renegade priestess of an ancient god, fabled cities, barbarian tribes, buxom wenches and high-minded ladies. These are tales that conjure up a theater-of-the-mind experience that will long be remembered after the listening is done.

5.0 out of 5 stars He's back (again)!, February 15, 2000
Sure it's a reprint of old work, but who cares? Jordan does Conan justice and it's good to read (or re-read) them. Conan's been done by many others, but few as well as Jordan does. It's also nice to read something by him that doesn't take a program just to tell who the players are. It's a good read that you can afford to put down (if you can) and pick up again without re-reading the whole book to see where you were.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good but not as Good as Howard, June 7, 2000
I just finished this book and I enjoyed very much, however if you are new to Conan stories I strongley suggest you start with the orginal Robert E. Howard books and then make your way to Jordans version. I think Jordon is the best one to take on Conan since Robert

5.0 out of 5 stars Conan lives!, April 12, 2010

Another Outstanding trio of savage Conan stories by the master Robert Jordan.
Arguably the best Conan writer after the great Robert E Howard.
The collection of stories really captures the nature of the barbarian warrior as he battles
sorcerers ,evil rulers, etc, spending his illgotten gains obtained from fat greedy merchants on loose women and drink
A feast for red blooded men

4.0 out of 5 stars Super Reader, August 1, 2007
Am omnibus collection of three reasonable Robert Jordan Conan pastiches. They try hard to be confusing with Conan publishing, with Chronicles all over the place, and with his name Robert as well, sheesh.

Conan the Magnificent is actually quite a reasonable pastiche. The barbarian runs into a female thief, who bests him before he realises.

Getting into more trouble, he has to leave Shadizar for a while, where he encounters a female noblewoman who likes to hunt with a small retinue.

Some others would like her jewels and other treasures lurk, so there is sword swinging to be done, and an evil sorcerer to top it off.

3.5 out of 5

Conan this time has three women to deal with, although the first, a young nobleman reduced to trying out trulldom is easy, once he finds her employment.

The high priestess of a demon lord he is working for and does not know it is far worse.

Karela the Red Hawk just likes to compare him to any dirty ugly animal she can think of because she likes him so much and doesn't know whether to shag him or stab him.
All this on top of leading a Free Company.

3 out of 5

Conan gets poisoned, and gets to trade sword blows with more than one demon, as well as deal with devious Vendhyans.

3 out of 5

All of the tales included in this book were great. But, if you've read other books by Jordan this is all but expected. I would recomend this book to anyone who likes fantasy novels. I would also recommend any of the other books written by the Master.

I read the first story of this collected trilogy and enjoyed it. The first story was "Conan the Magnificant." It was enjoyable. It was nothing special, but it was certainly a competent short story.

I read halfway through the second story collected in this trilogy "Conan the triumphant", and quit.

The reason why is because this story was falling into the same mold of the first one. A competent short fantasy story - but nothing more. Life is to short to spend just on competent short stories. I must move on to other books that will be more enjoyable for me druring my short time on Earth.

One final note on the second story; halfway through the story I could easily tell how it was going to end up. All the plot devices and characters were in place. Reading the last 140 pages would just be witnessing the pieces falling into place to wind up the story.

I will rate this book 3 stars out of 5. This does not achieve the minimum 4 star rating that in my opinion makes a book worthwhile to read.

Skip it unless you like average short fantasy stories about Conan.
