Editorial Reviews

2012 two CD release, a tribute to Jazz legend Bill Evans. Join master pianist Chick Corea as he leads original Evans alumni - bassist Eddie Gomez and the late drummer Paul Motian - on Further Explorations. The spirit of Evans comes alive thanks to the vibrant simpatico shared by these three master musicians. Produced by Corea, Further Explorations was recorded May 4-17, 2010, live at the Blue Note in New York City. (2011 marks the 50th anniversary of the release of Evans' original Explorations LP with Motian and bassist Scott LaFaro on the Riverside label.) In preparation, Corea, Gomez and Motian examined the entire Bill Evans discography. Rather than approach the music as a tribute, his material provides more of a template. Each musician also contributes original material.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's a Chick Corea Album February 1, 2012
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
After a good listen through, I would agree with the above review that it isn't a Bill Evans album. But for the pieces that were Bill's own, it a pretty good extention via another great pianists' style, and excellent listening. Thus the title "Further Extentions". After just seeing Chick play with his own Return to Forever tour playing his own music, I must say his playing on this album is remarkably "Un-Chick", due probably to his attempt to capture and extend Bill Evan's spirit. Whether that can ever be done is open to question, for sure, as I think Bill Evans was the best jazz pianist who ever lived. What I can say for sure is that *artiste* arguments aside, this is a fine, straight up jazz album of music from a master done by a master. Honestly, the chance to hear Paul Motian's playing now in the same idiom he played in with Bill Evans some 40+ years ago is worth the ticket price alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars masterpiece of further exploration April 20, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This must be one of their masterpieces. The sound quality is great. Motian's sticks are clear and powerful. Gomez's chords are lively and melodious. Corea pays homage to Evans' spirit by approaching each number as an adventure rather than reviving the atmosphere of the trio at old times. Everything is rooted in Evans and strongly remind of this, but it spreads out in various directions Evans never tried, nor had the time. Corea has a more percussive attack than the original trio. Evans trio concept hasn't died out. The trio is fully improvising and tossing ideas at one another and everybody making something of it. Every note becomes another creation or idea. It can still provoke surprise and pleasure, when Corea shows his personality and gaiety. This is the proof that the best tribute to the past is not the recreation of old sounds but further adventure of leftover, unexplored possibilities.
It's very sad Motian died shortly before the release of this album. This became his last explorations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Captured the essence of the shows January 22, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Having had the opportunity to see two of the Further Explorations shows in NY I have been hoping that Chick would release recordings that captured these wonderful concerts. This CD set does a terrific job of capturing the spirit and talent highlighted by the once in a lifetime experience of seeing Corea, Gomez and Motian together interpreting Bill Evans and their own recordings in the trio style pioneered by Evans. Hearing Peri's Scope, Gloria's Step and Alice in Wonderland played by these guys in magic. With Motian's passing this recording becomes a truly priceless opportunity to hear history in the making.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great January 23, 2013

This is the best trio work that I have heard since Bill Evans and Monk. Chick has really grown and the others really meld beautifully. Too bad about Paul's death.

4.0 out of 5 stars COREA , MOTIAN AND GOMEZ BACK TO VILLAGE VANGUARD February 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a very special CD. In fact is like a homenage to Bill Evans recordings in Village Vanguard 50 years ago but at the end is a Chick Corea album with two of the essential musicians that play with Evans. First Paul Motian, one of the hero of the Villege Vanguard original sessions. In bass Eddy Gomez who play with Evans during 10 years. Evident the spirit of Evans is here, but is not a tribute to Evans, is like say the title a "Further Exploration". You can found pure Corea best material in years. Clasics Motian songs ,a typical Gomez intervention, all of this, more Evans standardS. The best thing is that the musician not try to make Bill Evans material one more time, they try go "further ". In the other side the problem is that anybody can forget de original sessions of Bill Evans, Scott Lafaro and Motian trio. Is a wonderful CD but you must remember that only part of the spirit oF Evans is here, but the sound and the echo still remaing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes a Chick Corea album that pays homage to Evans March 21, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I can't believe several of these reviews. Did you really expect Corea to imitate Evans? As someone who loves both Evans and Corea (when he is playing acoustic piano), I thoroughly enjoyed this album. If you're looking for an rendition of Evan's music which imitates Evans than by all means look elsewhere. However this cd provides is outstanding and is touchingly perhaps the last album with a contributions by Paul Motian, an early Evans collaborator. I love Corea with Eddie Gomez. Eddie has such a great sound, and to hear him with Corea offers such an interesting contrast to his work with Evans. I thought they were truly in synch throughout. Corea has such a marvelous ability to create interesting music with a wide variety of musicians, and I hope he and Gomez get together again in the near future. By the way while I gave it 4 stars, I really meant 4 1/2, its just that Amazon does not provide that option. Now after a couple of months of listening to this album I have decided it is a five star disc and have had to revise my rating upwards. I listen to it several times a week.
