This is deep, subtle, intelligent stuff. You'll need to listen over and over again, but you'll want to; it just gets better and better. This album really is a case of less is more. I love the fact that there doesn't have to be a selection of up-tempo tracks, doesn't have to be drums, doesn't have to be anything but great songs and the sparest - yet solid and rhythmic - musical setting. Greg Brown's voice is the icing on the cake. You need to buy this.

I own seven Greg Brown CDs and this one is my favorite and in my top ten of all time. This guy should be much more popular than he is. He and Lyle Lovett have similar styles to where they can write such beautiful and sad songs, but then can write songs that are just so funny, although their music is different.Everything works on Further In and there is not a bad song. Kelly Joe Phelps and Bo Ramsey are awesome as well. If you buy only one Greg Brown CD, this is it. If you buy more, buy in this order: One Night, The Live One, Dream Cafe, The Poet Game, Slant 6 Mind and Covenant. Check out Lyle Lovett's Joshua Judges Ruth, Pontaic, His Large Band or The Road to Ensenada. Kelly Joe Phelps' first disk is awesome too. Martin Sexton is also awesome. His Black Sheep and his live disc are incredible.

This is and will always be my favorite album. Words can not explain how relaxing, and simplifying Further In is. It oozes with sentimentality and gently carresses the listener in melody. a feast for your spririt, and a deep hot bath for your soul.
