Discovering Thompson-like hitting the mother lode,
By C.J. Brown "Corinne" (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Further On (Audio CD)
If this alt-country artist is new to you like he was to me, you'd better put all expectations aside. He'll exceed them. If you could put a sound to sincerity, this would be it. With great guitar work and a confident voice, each song is anchored by superb back up, especially fiddle and driving percussion that seem to bring these melodies home. Lose yourself in lyrics that tell all our stories: rural or urban, a common angst. Best cuts are easily Ol' #7, an ode to a great locomotive [...]and Riptide, pure poetry wrought out of one man's pain. You'll hear the best rendition ever of Utah Philip's Rocks, Salt and Nails and you'll clasp your hands in grateful thanks with Further On, a pure Appalachian sound that's almost hymnal. I'm a convert--I accept his truth, full of grace. Indeed, there may be a better place further on--but for now, listen to Thompson and dig being right here. It doesn't get better than this.

We have waited for 4 years but its well worth it. This album is a jewel, 10 wonderful songs coming from different inspirations. With this album, RT reaches another level of his career.
