5.0 out of 5 stars Local Portland Rag Review (WW has no music rating system), December 15, 1999

FELLER

Flanked all around with touchy-feely acoustic rock, the 11 songs on Furthermore make high marks in ardor, rootsiness and strong vocal delivery. When the quartet kicks into rock gear, the result is not too far from the land of the Dave Matthews Band. The rock-and-roll aesthetic is nice, but even nicer is when the pace and percussion slow down and let the acoustic guitar shine through, as on "Heavy Gone." -Willamette Week (AI )

5.0 out of 5 stars Portlandcitysearch.com review, February 22, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Furthermore (Audio CD)
The vocals of Portland band Feller have an explosive edge, almost like a loose cannon that could fire at any moment. Rather than the usual "lead singer, back-up singer" combination, Scott Barton and Jack Wilcox sometimes sing lead simultaneously, each with his own flavor. It's not a refined counter-melody; it's more like a gloriously ignited vocal frenzy. But whether singing with growling, sweating, rage or distant, ghostly calmness, Barton and Wilcox define this music with attitude.

Feller's songs have an acoustic-guitar layer at the base, supporting electric leads with a variety of shades and tones that span the guitar-sound spectrum. Style-wise, the music is an umbra of non-twang, non-punk alt-country with rock, jazz and folk influences of various intensities floating through it. "Headed West" is a syncopated masterpiece of tantalizing, juxtaposed rhythms and moods. It's a tease that dares you to find the beat with your poor, lost, wandering foot. Then within the blip of a nanosecond, the syncopation drops out and the song becomes straight-up rock and roll. There's a sense that Feller is like a band of desperadoes or lone rangers wandering the wild musical west. Their songs feel shadowy, as if they're always teetering on the rim of danger, yet they're illuminated with brilliantly executed musical and lyrical ideas. These guys don't ride off into the sunset, though-they forge ahead by the light of the full moon. -Fran Gray
